You will experience great customer service with very polite and friendly staff who is interested in you and always seek to help you. It was a lovely stay at my very first ryokan.
The staff at Ryori Ryokan Tsurugata were amazing. They are all so friendly and attentive. The dinner in the room was an amazing experience and the breakfast meal was a great way to start the day. We had a room with our own private garden which provided a great view in the morning as we woke up. This has been my favorite place to stay in Japan and I hope to revisit Kurashiki just to stay at this place again.
The perfect place to live out any dreams of being in Rurouni Kenshin. In fact they shot one scene from the movie (a bridge where Sanoske and Kenshin duel) two or three buildings down. The ryokan serves a traditional breakfast and dinner, they make your futon for you, and lend you a yukata. In front of the place is a little river in the center of a historical district (Kurashiki Binkan). The staff are very friendly and accommodating.
The staff at the ryokan were excellent, super kind and helpful. However, also a bit disorganized. We were asked three times to fill out the registration card after we had already checked in. Most disturbingly, a staff member entered our room after 9 PM without knocking and, for some reason, demanded to see our key. When we then complained at the front desk, we got a very Japanese too-embarrassed answer rather than addressing our complaint.
The dinners were superbly presented, but uneven in quality. The sashimi course on the first night was barely edible, and we love sashimi. But most of the rest of the meals were excellent.
And a suggestion, take a room on the second floor. The walls are paper thin, of course, but so is the ceiling it seems, and we were kept awake by the movement of the guests above us.
The ryokan is in a stellar location, and we enjoyed our stay, but there is room for improvement, for sure.
Good:
-Food is great, good quantity and quality. Especially the seafood!
-Location is great, in the center of the shopping area. Especially beautiful at night and early morning.
Could be better:
-The room smelled a bit like restroom - but seemed to come from the AC unit? Maybe it needs to be cleaned.
-A no smoking sign outside the bath/shower area - in the morning it smelled like smoke, even after closing the window.
