The Lawns, No. 5 Colmer House Located deep in the heart of the South Hams, you will find The Lawns, No.5 Colmer House. An English Tourist Board 5-star rated luxury holiday apartment, and part of the Colmer Estate, it is set in 28 acres of private grounds, with an extensive range of year round indoor and outdoor leisure facilities.
Colmer House is an 18th Century Georgian building, sympathetically renovated and restored to its former glory in the mid-1990s and converted into a number of privately owned luxury apartments. The Lawns has very recently been refurbished to the highest standards offering comfort and practicality.
The Lawns is the centre right apartment at the front of the Manor House, with a south facing aspect and wonderful views from its windows across the grounds to the lake. The lounge doors lead directly to a large paved patio, surrounded by a balustrade wall which looks out over the immaculate lawns. The patio is private, sheltered and is furnished with a table, chairs and gas barbecue.
A private entrance leads directly to a spacious open-plan lounge and dining area with fitted kitchen. Tastefully decorated, the lounge features a cream 3 piece leather suite, brown leather dining chairs and table, TV, video and DVD player. The kitchen is fully equipped with electric cooker, microwave, large fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine/tumble-drier.
Stairs lead to a large open landing, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. Brightly furnished throughout , the master bedroom has a large double bed, generous wardrobes and a comfortable arm-chair to relax in. The large second bedroom has 2 single beds and the bathroom features a bath, power-shower, toilet and hand basin, all equipped to a very high standard.
The apartment has wireless broadband internet for those of you that bring your laptops with you.
We regret, The Lawns is a non-smoking property and no pets are permitted.
The Colmer Estate The excellent facilities of the Colmer estate are all free of charge and exclusively for the use of the Colmer Guests. These include swimming pools, a tennis court, fishing lake, fitness suite, croquet lawn and boules.
The outdoor kidney-shaped swimming pool is heated from the May Spring Bank Holiday through the summer months, and the Indoor pool is heated all the year round. The fitness suite is equipped with rowing, walking and cycling machines, a sit up frame and a bench press with weights.
28 acres of private grounds include a mixture of grass lawns, woodland, wild flower meadows, a walled garden equipped with children’s play equipment and boules pitch. Coarse fishing is available on the private lake, which is stocked with large Carp and Golden Rudd. You can always find plenty of walks to try, or a secluded spot where you can picnic, quietly read or just doze. The estate is home to a variety of wildlife - badgers, foxes, rabbits, deer, and game birds such as woodcocks and pheasants. And of course the moorhens and resident mallards on the lake!
Discounted temporary membership is available at the nearby Dartmouth Golf and County Club on Green Fees and all their leisure facilities. Other courses in the area include Bigbury - Thurstone and Wrangton. Horse riding is also available nearby.
It is superbly positioned for ease of access to Kingsbridge, Salcombe,Dartmouth,Totnes and Plymouth, and is surrounded by picturesque villages and unspoilt country side. Dartmoor and Torbay are also within easy reach. The nearest beaches are at Bigbury, Bantham, Thurlestone and Hope Cove. The coast is perfect for sailing, windsurfing, body boarding and other water sports, while also providing safe sandy beaches for families

We loved staying at the Colmer Estate. Comfortable, homely and with all the mod cons. The estate is stunning and the indoor pool was fantastic entertainment (we stayed for October half term). The location is brilliant for exploring Dartmoor, Dartmouth, Plymouth and Totnes, as well as Pennywell Farm and Crealy theme park. Lorraine couldn’t have been more wonderful, sending us lots of useful information beforehand and welcoming us with lots of goodies to enjoy. Would stay again and thoroughly recommend!

A lovely stay at The Lawns. The property was ideal for our young family. It had everything you could possibly need away from home. The grounds were great for exploring and the pool was a big hit.

The apartment was just as described. We had everything we needed in comfortable surroundings. We didn’t get much opportunity to explore the grounds, or South Devon as it was just about the wettest week of the year. But we couldn’t fault the apartment as a cosy refuge.

The property was well appointed, and well laid out, so felt spacious despite its relatively modest size. We had everything we needed, and the outdoor space with terrace, BBQ and loungers was fabulous, with peaceful views of gorgeous gardens and trees. Our sons enjoyed exploring, and the outdoor pool was really large, and kept them entertained for many hours. The location is in close proximity to many attractions and outdoor facilities. We enjoyed a really relaxing and peaceful week away. The owners were helpful and very quick to respond to queries. We would definitely return!

We had a brilliant stay, the property is so well set out it was like a home from home. Our 2 boys 4&8 just settled in brilliantly. The estate is a beautiful place to stay with its indoor and out door swimming pools. Along with plenty of room to just take a stroll in the countryside. The location of the estate is surrounded by many great family days out, Woodlands is always a hit with the kids. Totnes farmers market is a delightful place to go and spoil your self with some yummy local produce. The coast is just a short car ride away with plenty of fine Devon beaches. We love the estate this was our third visit and we will definitely be back.

We are a family of 5 and don’t always find it easy to stay places! But we had a great stay at Barry and Lorraine’s place! Lorraine was great at responding to us via email and made it a lovely, easy stay.
The house was very clean, the patio is lovely and the grounds fantastic for the children to run around in. We also have a 7 year old son who is very keen fisherman, we fished on the lake and used the swimming pool and almost always had it to ourselves which was a bonus!
We were able to access the coast easily and there are lots of trout fishing lakes around the area.
I’d definitely recommend this is as place to stay with your family!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Lawns - the apartment was warm and cosy with comfortable beds and all the amenities you’d expect from a high quality short break . There is an indoor swimming pool on site and a small gym . It is well- sited to visit lots of beaches and towns with good access and the apartment has its own parking space just outside . I would definitely recommend this apartment to my friends and family , thanks Lorraine and Barry !

Our family stayed in this apartment for one week 18-25 August 2018. The apartment was clean, spacious and had all the mod cons (plus good Wi-Fi!). On arrival, there was even a Devon cream tea awaiting us, which was lovely. The gardens, lake and surroundings were beautiful, and it was an ideal place where you could choose to make acquaintances with the other holiday-makers on the Colmer Estate, or keep yourselves to yourselves! We made full use of the tennis court (which was always available when we popped down there). The best part for our family - myself and 3 children (ages 10, 13 and 15) were the swimming pools - they were glorious! We definitely made full use of both of these warm, large, inviting pools. One of my daughters really suffers in the cold, but when I spoke to the lady maintaining the pools during our stay, she informed me that she kept the pools to 27 degrees and 31 degrees respectively - couldn't get my daughter out of the pool, even at night!! The estate was within 20 minutes drive of some really lovely beaches (some touristy, some really quiet even in August!), plus walkable to the local petrol station to stock up on groceries. There were lots of lovely little walks just in the grounds around the lake, with lots of wildlife-spotting on offer.
All in all, this was a perfect holiday that we will definitely be booking again - a hidden gem in a beautiful part of Devon.

We were thrilled to arrive to such a clean fresh looking accommodation after such a long journey. The Lawns was everything we had hoped for and more and is clearly well maintained and looked after. The location of The Lawns was perfect for us as a family, relaxing on the patio whiles our children played on the lawn (within our view) couldn't of been any more perfect. We will absolutely definitely be back and highly recommend to everyone. It was the best holiday and our first in this country for a number of years! THANK YOU

Visited 21-28th July. The Lawns is a beautiful and well equipped family holiday home. Personal touches provided by the owners were lovely and appreciated by our family. The private terrace is a real sun trap and having use of the loungers and outdoor dining table was a great added extra.
The grounds of the Colmer Estate are beautiful and well established. Our family really enjoyed using both the outdoor and indoor heated pools throughout the day.
We also used the table tennis table by the poolside, the tennis courts and the fishing lake.
There is a fish and chip van that visits the campsite just outside the Colmer Estate entrance every Wednesday at 7.30pm. Well worth using.
We visited Salcombe which was rather quaint, Kingsbridge where we had a drink at the Crabmill Inn overlooking the estuary and Bigbury-on-Sea where we walked over to Burgh Island.
We would love to visit again in the future and it was a pleasure to communicate with Lorraine the owner who made every effort to ensure our family would be comfortable and enjoy our stay.
Thank you again to Lorraine and Barry for all of your help and communication.

If you are looking for a holiday in Devin, then you should consider this apartment in the South Hams area (near Ivybridge). With one double and twin beds, this luxury apartment is set within the Colmer Estate. In addition, the complex has heated indoor AND outdoor pools (a real bonus bearing in mind you don't get the latter overseas!) to cater for all weather! We enjoyed all the facilities during the heat wave in June 2018. Highly recommended for couples and families.

We stayed for a week in the Lawns with our two teenage boys. The apartment was clean, modern and very comfortable. It has a great patio and BBQ area where we could sit and relax. The indoor and outdoor pools are great and we used them every day. The large grounds are well kept, peaceful and impressive. The Colmer Estate is centrally located and ideal for visiting all parts of the beautiful South Hams. We would highly recommend the Lawns and would definitely will be coming back!
Thanks for a lovely holiday

Lovely arrival. The location is fabulous it looks very grand. Property comes with its own parking space which is just below the steps of the entrance.
Scones were left for us and on opening the fridge. It contained a small milk, jam, clotted cream and a bottle of wine.
The house has lovely views of the garden. The patio area gets a lot of sun especially compared to the apartments at the rear of the property. We had plenty of room for a family of 4. There are a couple of toys upstairs for the children and a lovely selection of books for all ages. Not that anything got used as we were spoilt for choice as to where to go for the day. Although the children would have been more than happy playing in the pools all day. They also made friends with other children staying either side of us. The grounds are safe enough for them all to go exploring together as long as they can be trusted not to go near any water.
We went during half term and I think every property on the estate was full. You wouldn't have thought it though. At times we had the both pools to ourselves. Both of which are heated. The indoor pool is especially warm. Without getting the shivers when leaving the water. Great when the weather is cooler outside.
There is a small well-stocked spar within walking distance and a pub, which serves some lovely meals. One evening we decided to have a barbecue. On return from the shop we forgot to buy charcoal. On opening the barbecue it contained an instant barbecue. We couldn't believe our luck. We even found matches at the property too. On our trips out we came across plenty of supermarkets. I think tesco extra was the nearest about a 20min drive. I would recommend a trip to Plymouth Aquarium and slightly further away Quines Honey Farm.
The Lawns is a perfect hideaway for those who are willing to make their own fun. The property gets very warm with the sun. Even with all windows open at night there is complete silence outside, once all the small birds settle down. The windows also have lovely wooden shutters which do a great job at keeping insects out at night.
We would definitely consider returning for another visit. Lorraine was lovely and was very accommodating. My daughter decided to hide my phone on checking out. On returning home I contacted Lorraine and she arranged return. She even sent us some tablecloth drawings for the children.
The house had plenty of maps, leaflets and a file containing an interesting read about the estate.

Wow, I have never been to South Hams before, or indeed stayed at such a lovely place ( both the Lawns and the Colmer estate). So if I am honest was a little hesitant at what we would find. But I need not have worried, The Colmer estate is beautiful ( even when the weather is against you)..The indoor pool is heated to a perfect temperature and even when you get out to get changed you don't get the usual chill, it was immaculate and we spent each morning there.
The tennis courts were great fun, and the views, walks and streams all over the estate were great and beautiful to see so much wildlife.I would definitely though recommend wellingtons if there has been some rain :-).
which then brings me to where we stayed. - Wow! This place was beautiful everything had been thought of, from the welcome package all the way through the apartment.
The place is clean, beautifully decorated, light airy has everything you could need- you relax the moment you enter the building. A quick overview -
Overall the place was extremely clean, had all the cutlery, crockery, glassware you could want. A washing machine, oven and microwave all immaculate.
The kitchen itself is very roomy and you could easily sit at the dining table whilst someone still pottering in the kitchen.
The sofas are comfy and the lots of room in the front room, and if you get the chance to open the patio doors ( we managed on 2 days) a very lovely sun trap.
The bathroom was clean, and everything worked. The hot water was exactly that hot.with a great pressure and the towels left, were proper sized towels, and all soft and fluffy..
The bedrooms, were very tastefully decorated with loads of storage/wardrobe space for hanging things up.
The 2nd bedroom had some children books which we made use of as Dr Seuss is a new favourite.lol.
And most importantly the beds were comfortable and there were enough pillows plus spares so you could have as many or as few as you wished.
All in all a fantastic relaxing break - just what we needed. As I said the weather was against us most of the time, but that did not deter a fantastic break and would highly recommend it.
Will be back

With a large private patio and grand steps leading down to the beautiful lake, The Lawns evokes a country house escapists dream. The accommodation was beautiful, nicely furnished, spacious yet cosy. The welcome pack and Devon tea eased us into our comfort zone which lasted throughout our stay.
A splash in the heated indoor pool put us in the mood for the short drive to Kingsbridge for a wander around the artisan shops then the scenic harbour, pubs and restaurants.
Another day we visited Bigbury Bay with its serene river, pristine sands and iconic Burgh Island.
The stunning art-deco Burgh Island hotel has featured in quite a few film and TV mysteries and as we wandered around snapping our posh selfies we expected to bump into Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot at any moment!
The weather was rather chilly so no long beach and countryside rambles this time but we plan to return in the summer with the kids to really enjoy Colmer’s outdoor pool, adventure playground, tennis courts, woods, river and fishing lake.
