A colony of sea lions dwells between the stacks and arches of this island’s rugged coastline, lapped by the clear water of the Gulf of California.
One of the highlights of the region, Isla Espiritu Santo is a great place to swim with sea lions. Scuba diving and snorkeling are among the popular activities on this picturesque islet with remote and pristine beaches. Dive into the clear waters to get a closer look at the colorful fish, turtles and dolphins.
Hike along the rear of the sandy beaches enclosing the island. Put on your snorkeling gear or go scuba diving with a tour operator to explore the surrounding reefs. Spot parrotfish, trumpetfish and rainbow wrasse, among other aquatic creatures. With luck, you may see whales and even sharks. Often, scuba packages include lunch on a small islet or bay. Marvel at the rock formations comprising stacks and arches that decorate the coast.
Arrive on the tiny islet of San Rafaelito and admire the lighthouse. Great blue herons, turkey vultures and hummingbirds are among the winged creatures that gather here. Travel north to the smaller Isla Partida, where you’ll find the Ensenada Grande. With its dramatic cliffs and white sand, it is considered one of Mexico’s most gorgeous beaches.
At the northern tip of the archipelago lies Los Islotes, which has a large sea lion colony. Go swimming with these impressive animals, who number around 150 in winter and more than 300 in summer. They are known to be more playful and active in spring and early summer.
The island lies a little offshore from La Paz in the Gulf of California. Arrange your trip from the city with one of the tour guides. You can take a day trip or climb aboard a fishing boat from Playa El Tecolote to the island.
There is a fee for the boat trip and entrance to the national park on the island. For additional enjoyment, go to some of the other nearby islets, such as Isla Cerralvo and Isla San José.
