THE HOME: Beautiful and extremely comfortable. I can't say enough about how much the little extras helped us enjoy our stay - a stereo to listen to music, lots of pots, pans, and utensils (including a waffle maker, electric griddle, and nice pokers for campfire marshmallows), board games and cards, lamps and pillows everywhere, and decor and furniture that feels thoughtful and inviting. We also probably played with every outdoor toy - croquet, badminton, volleyball, etc. It's a great place to spend some time with the whole family.
THE LOCATION: Very private with beautiful views. I think if you had a compact car, the gravel stretch of road leading up to it might be a little tough, but the minivan had no problems going up and down and it's by no means a scary endeavor. And it really is many degrees warmer when you leave the house and go downhill. We had the windows open the entire time and there literally was always a breeze. It was amazing for us to escape the typical summer heat and humidity that we have in Northern Kentucky and get what felt like fall temps in the evenings and morning up there.
THE SITES: Part of what makes the location so great is that while it's totally secluded, it's close enough that you can still get out and see some things, even with little kids who maybe don't like sitting in the car. The farthest we went was a late afternoon trip to Grayson Highlands State Park about an hour away. It was really worth the drive. The scenery is just beautiful. We walked the Rhododendron Trail and got to see many wild ponies. It was a blast.
I also recommend Peach Bottom Falls, which is only about 20 minutes from the house, where you can splash around in the falls on a hot day.
We visited the Jefferson National Forest for a couple of hikes, including an overlook that offered beautiful views.
Ciro's Pizza in Independence was delicious and I would recommend it.
HELPFUL TO KNOW: While there were virtually no mosquitoes anywhere we went, we did find several ticks on the kids one day, so bring your spray.
Like the owner states, the internet can be a little fickle. It was enough to look up directions and check email, which was perfect for us, but that's about all I would count on using it for. I was extremely glad to have it at all.
While the grocery store is under construction in Independence, you'll have to drive a good bit for groceries, though the pantry was already well stocked with a few essentials. Much appreciated!
