Bring the whole group to Kulakane, a small beachfront condominium right on the Honokowai coast of West Maui, between Kaanapali and Kapalua, where green sea turtles graze on the reef just off the seawall. Your reservation includes two private 2-bedroom condos, with an open loft in Unit B, two full kitchens, two living rooms and two private oceanfront lanais, with the oceanfront pool, gas barbecues and the lawn at the water's edge right outside.
What we guarantee: Both condos are always inside Kulakane. Unit A is a 2-bedroom condo and Unit B is a 2-bedroom condo with an open loft, with exactly the beds listed below in every bedroom and in the loft. Each home has the view shown for it in its photos. Both homes are kept to the same quality standard, with finishes similar to what you see in these photos. If we ever could not deliver that, you would approve the alternative first or receive a full refund.
Bed types: Unit A - Master Bedroom: Queen; Bedroom 2: Queen. Living room sofa bed; Unit B - Master Bedroom: Queen; Bedroom 2: Queen; Open loft: Queen. Living room sofa bed.
Unit A's two queen bedrooms sleep 4 and its living room sleeper sofa sleeps 2 more, for 6. Unit B's two queen bedrooms and its queen open loft sleep 6, and its sleeper sofa sleeps 2 more, for 8. Together the two condos sleep up to 14 guests.
Unit A is a two-bedroom home with a queen bed in each bedroom, a full kitchen, a living and dining area and an oceanfront lanai. Unit B adds an open loft to its two queen bedrooms: the loft is reached by stairs and is open to the living area below, so it works best for kids, teens or friends who don't need a closed door. Both homes have lanais facing the channel between Lanai and Molokai.
Good to know before you book: each condo has its own front door and its own entry details. Kulakane is a three-story building with no elevator, so expect stairs, and Unit B's loft is also reached by stairs. Parking is on site and included with your stay. There is a 4-night minimum, with check-in from 3 PM and check-out by 11 AM.
The Space:
Unit A (2BR): Unit A is a two-bedroom oceanfront condo with a living and dining area that opens onto a lanai looking out across the channel, the place for coffee at sunrise and for watching turtles and, in winter, humpback whales. Both bedrooms have queen beds, an even split for two couples or a family. The fully equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, cookware and dishes for cooking at home, and the living room sofa opens into a bed for two more guests, bringing this home to 6.
Unit B (2BR + loft): Unit B has two queen bedrooms plus an open loft with a third queen bed, reached by stairs and open to the living area, which gives the home a bright, airy feel. The loft is ideal for older kids or friends, and the sleeper sofa in the living room adds space for two more guests, for a total of 8 in this home. Like Unit A, it has a full kitchen, a living and dining area and an oceanfront lanai.
The resort: Kulakane is an intentionally small-scale oceanfront property, with an oceanfront swimming pool, gas barbecue grills, a lawn with direct ocean access, on-site parking and no resort fees. The seawall fronting the property is well known to long-time guests for the year-round honu activity on the reef directly offshore, and the snorkeling off the seawall is consistently good on calm days. A small pocket of sand in front of the building comes and goes with the tides and the weather, and Honokowai Beach Park, a sandy spot with calmer water, is a short walk away. During humpback whale season, December through April, whales are close enough offshore to watch from the lanais. Both condos are inside Kulakane, so the whole group shares the same pool, lawn and ocean view.
Guest Access:
Your reservation includes the private interiors of both condos, each with its own front door and its own entry details, plus the shared Kulakane amenities: the oceanfront swimming pool, the gas barbecue grills, the oceanfront lawn with direct ocean access, and on-site parking.
The Neighborhood:
Honokowai is a laid-back, local-feeling stretch of West Maui between the Kaanapali resorts and Kapalua, and Kulakane sits right in it. A few minutes' walk from the building brings you to a coffee shop, a bakery and several local restaurants, including Bad Ass Coffee and Pau Bakery, two favorites with locals and visitors. Honokowai Beach Park is a short walk, with a playground, picnic tables, showers and calm water, and the Honokowai farmers market sits across the road from it. Times Supermarket in Honokowai is the closest full grocery stop for stocking both kitchens, so a quick morning run for coffee, pastries and supplies is an easy start to the day.
Drive 5 to 10 minutes south and you reach Kaanapali Beach and Whalers Village, with resort dining, shopping, golf and the beachfront walkway. Drive 5 to 15 minutes north for Kapalua, with its bays, world-class golf and the Kapalua Coastal Trail, and Honolua Bay, a famous snorkel spot in summer and surf spot in winter. Napili Bay, a sheltered cove popular for snorkeling and turtle spotting, is on the way.
West Maui's sunsets are a nightly event from the Kulakane lawn, and in winter the channel between Maui, Molokai and Lanai is one of the best places in Hawaii to watch humpbacks from shore.
Getting Around:
Kahului Airport (OGG), Maui's main airport, is about 50 minutes by car from the Kaanapali area, and Kapalua Airport, which serves interisland flights, is about 5 miles north. A rental car is the easiest way to explore West Maui and the rest of the island, and on-site parking at Kulakane is included with your stay. Coffee, a bakery, restaurants and Honokowai Beach Park are all within walking distance, and Kaanapali and Kapalua are each a short drive along Lower Honoapiilani Road. Rideshare operates on Maui, though pickups in West Maui are easiest to arrange in advance.
Other Things to Note:
Arrival instructions, entry details and parking information for both condos are provided with your reservation.
