Heroes’ Square (Hősök Tere) is one of the most visited areas in Budapest and was a center for activities in Hungary’s millennial celebration in 1896. See the towering Millennium Monument, which is the showcase of the square. It was designed for the celebration by Albert Schickedanz in 1894, but not completed until 1929. Three years later the area was given the name of Heroes’ Square.
The Millennium Monument is a white column standing 118 feet (36 meters) high. The archangel Gabriel is at its top. Statues symbolizing war and peace, work and welfare and knowledge and glory sit upon lower colonnades. View statues commemorating Árpád, the leader of the Hungarians during their conquest of the Carpathians in 895, and seven Hungarian tribal chiefs on horseback around the base.
When Soviets occupied Budapest the square was frequently used for military and special Communist celebrations. Fittingly, Imre Nagy, who led the Hungarians in an uprising against the Soviets in 1956 was reburied in the square in 1989. There is also a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Morning visits are best, before the square and park begin to fill up. Walk through the square itself in about an hour, but be sure to allow time to visit the park, galleries and museum. On one side is the Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum) and on the other is the Hall of Art. The square is the primary entrance to City Park (Varosliget) with its many attractions of Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyadvár), the public zoo and thermal baths.
There is no fee to enter Heroes’ Square or City Park. Heroes’ Square is in Pest at the end of Andrássy Avenue’s promenade from the Danube River. The historic working subway system parallels the avenue underground. Buses and trolleys also have stops at the square. Walk to the Danube in less than an hour it’s just over 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) west from the square.

The apartment was very cute & clean. We arrived after dark so it was a bit difficult to get into the unit. Very detailed instructions (w/ pics!) were given but it was dark in staircase & courtyard & using a cell phone light on silver lock box dials made things complicated. In our foggy, traveling brains, we thought we were getting keys from an office door & didn't realize it was our actual unit but a neighbor guided us. The description & details are accurate - the ceiling upstairs is 6' tall, my husband's head rubbed the ceiling. The stairs going up to the bed are very, very steep. We were both so nervous we would fall in the middle of the night if we went downstairs for the restroom so we ended up using the super comfy, fold out couch in the living room. There were even extra blankets and pillows stored inside the couch! The washer/dryer takes 2 1/2 hrs to wash & dry, plan accordingly. It is made for small loads so do not expect to dump a suitcase worth of clothes into one load. It was nice to have the convenience though. The neighborhood was a good central location and we felt safe walking around.

I stayed at Maverick Apartments Budapest recently and had a decent overall experience.
The room itself was okay — not amazing, but not bad either. The building is clearly quite old and historic, which gives it character, but it also explains why the rooms probably aren’t heavily renovated. Because of that, some things felt a bit worn. The washroom had a strong smell, and the toilet flush button was broken during my stay. I assume these issues come with maintaining an older property, though they were still noticeable.
On the positive side, the location is excellent — you’re basically close to everything, which makes exploring the city very convenient. The staff were also friendly and welcoming, which definitely improved the stay.
Overall, it’s a reasonable place if you mainly want a great location and don’t mind a few imperfections in the room.

I stayed here for six nights. The room was clean and well equipped, and the staff were courteous. The room size was typical for a standard three-star hotel. The property also offers facilities such as a terrace and a spa.
We were a group of three, with one double bed and an additional sofa bed provided. The hotel is located in Buda, about a 45-minute walk from Elizabeth Bridge, or around 10 minutes by bus. While it is slightly far from the main tourist attractions, the area is safe, quiet, and walkable.
Breakfast was not included and cost €10 per person. It would be a nice improvement if breakfast were included, even with a slightly higher nightly rate.
