Make sure you check reliable sources to see if the trail is open (we checked what we thought was the correct website, but there was no mention that the flooding in 2019 forced the closure of the park). It was closed for repairs in Oct 2019 and looks like it will remain closed through the winter.
You now have to pay $12 a person for this hike and take a shuttle to get there. Personally I am so happy about this as it is no longer over crowded and is being preserved much better! It is short but can be very tough, especially for people not used to altitude! But if you can manage it.. its AMAZING. Make sure you make the extra small trek up to Spouting Rock!
There were still reservations for walk ups, so don't be intimidated by the system. Make sure you call or go online to see if there is availability, even if you didn't plan ahead. We did this with our little 5 and 3 year olds, and they made it!
This review is just about Hanging Lake - not the trail to get there - which is quite steep and difficult. The lake is spectacular and so is the Sprouting Rock Falls just a few minute higher hike from Hanging Lake.
We were unfortunately unable to visit because the parking area is closed due to crowds and now if you want to visit, you have to take a shuttle bus from town to the trail head and it's $12.00 per person.
If your are not in shape, do not attempt this hike!
