About this property
Gariwerd Family Lodge
Summary:
Spot a kangaroo grazing in the yard before your morning kettle has even finished boiling. Previously loved as a family home, Gariwerd Family Lodge is a four-bedroom retreat on half an acre of private land, built to bring groups together. Kids can run free while the adults take slow mornings around the long dining table or evening stories by the wood fire. The owners live and breathe these mountains, so this is a proper home base for multi-generational trips. Your door to Gariwerd opens here.
The Space:
Gather around the glowing wood heater or the outdoor fire pit as the sun sets, turning the day's mountain adventures into an evening of shared laughter and tomorrow's trail plans. Because this is a genuine former family home, the lodge holds a warmth you can feel the moment you walk through the door — built for the lively chaos of a big group getaway, not styled to look that way.
The ground floor is built to feed a crowd, flowing into a dining zone anchored by one long table where everyone shares meals together. A living room to sink into and a main bathroom with a deep bathtub round out the ground floor.
Up the internal staircase are four bedrooms: a king room, a queen room, a room with a king-single bunk over a queen plus a single trundle, and a fourth room with a king-single bunk and an additional trundle.
Outside, deep decks on both levels look over the grounds — an open invitation for kids to explore while you watch on from above. Fire up the gas BBQ, watch kangaroos graze in the twilight, gather around the wood fire pit as the temperature drops, or look up on a clear night for a genuinely dark sky. For bigger groups, coordinate with the neighbouring Gariwerd Tiny House to host up to 14 guests across the whole Gariwerd Family Retreat.
Guest Access:
Self check-in via the smart lock lets your group step inside the moment you arrive, no coordination needed. Outdoor sensor lighting guides the path even if you arrive after dark. Parking for up to five vehicles, including a covered carport.
The Neighborhood:
Dramatic sandstone ridges and native forest frame the everyday view here, right on the boundary line of Grampians National Park. A 15-minute stroll paths the way into the heart of Halls Gap for a morning flat white, a visit to the general store, or dinner at Flame Brothers. Venus Baths and The Grampians Peaks Trail trailhead also start here and the Adventure Golf and Café is a short walk further down the road.
Getting Around:
Leave the city pace behind for a scenic three-hour drive from Melbourne via the Western Highway. A vehicle is the most practical way to explore the Grampians' lookouts and waterfalls, though a daily regional bus service connects Halls Gap to train lines at Ararat and Ballarat. Bring the push bikes to ride the shared footpath into town or down to Lake Bellfield.
Other Things to Note:
Layout & stairs: Steps at the front entry, and all four bedrooms are upstairs via an internal staircase — there are no ground-floor beds. Not suited to guests who can't manage stairs, or to wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
Family set-up: A high chair is provided for our littlest guests.
Pets: Not pet-friendly. Registered assistance animals are always warmly welcomed.
Interaction with Guests:
Jenny and Ian manage Gariwerd Family Lodge locally and are on hand to share trail maps or take care of anything you need. The property owners run walking tours through the surrounding ranges themselves, so genuine local trail knowledge is one phone call away. Self check-in lets you arrive at your own pace after 3:00pm.
