Our stay in Fes was brief, too brief, but it was the highlight of our trip across southern Spain to Morocco and then France. The Dar Sghira house proved to be the perfect place for us to unwind from the excitement and fatigue of travel and of exploring the medina. We were very comfortable there. I especially enjoyed the view from the rooftop patio.
Our guide Mohamed shepherded us around the city and to several artisanal cooperatives to see artists at work with textiles, leather, fragrances, ceramics, etc. He was an excellent companion and gave us a wealth of information, matching the level of our interest in history. We got a keen sense of the medina as a living community, not just a museum, even though it has such a storied past.
We chose to have multiple meals prepared by Fatima to eat in the home, and we took a cooking class with her, which was enjoyable (and rewarding!). She also helped us with the arrangements for the hammam. We were grateful for all she did.
