  • The second oldest building remaining on The Ohio State University campus, Orton Hall was opened in 1893. It is named after Dr Edward Orton, Sr. who served as Ohio State's first president, OSU Professor of Geology from 1873 to 1899, and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899. Orton Hall is built of 40 different Ohio building stones. In the outside walls, these stones are laid in stratigraphic order according to their relative positions in Ohio's bedrock. The only non-indigenous to Ohio stone used is Indiana Limestone to build the front steps. It was chosen because of its high concentration of embedded fossils. The bell tower was dedicated in 1915 and contains 25,000 pounds of bells that can be heard regularly tolling across campus. Encircling the top of the tower are 24 columns with gargoyle-like figures which are restorations of fossil animals.

The beds seemed clean and the pillows were fluffy. Those were the only good things. There was hair in my shower. A lot of hair. One of the folded towels had hair dangling from it. There were what I think were garlic skins in the fridge. There was a dusty broken fork on the floor. Everything was scuffed and dirty. My friends room the microwave was busted off the wall and the sink pipes weren’t connected (he told the front desk, they didn’t fix it). The fitness center had water dripping from the ceiling and the front desk either told my husband there had been a shooting. Avoid this area altogether.

The room was great, nice beds, full kitchen, etc. The issues started when we settled in to the room. Turned on the TV to see a message indicating "Antenna not secure, check cable connection." Went to the front desk to ask about it whereby the person at the desk indicated, "I dont know what's wrong with the TV, maintenance will be here in the morning maybe you can ask them." The other issue, the room had no towels when we arrived with a sign indicating you had to ask for them. I went to the front desk at 7:45am on Saturday and asked for towels but was told, "Housekeeping isn't here and we don't have any towels." They weren't major issues but we would consider going to anotehr property for these reasons.

The property itself was nice and the staff were friendly, but unfortunately our stay had some issues. We were in town for the Arnold Sports Festival and did not have any hot water in our room the entire time. We also reported that our TV was not working on Friday and were told someone would come fix it, but it was never repaired during our stay. When we asked about the hot water, the front desk mentioned there had been a fire previously and the boiler had gone out, and they were surprised no one had informed us ahead of time. It would have been helpful to know this before arriving. The property itself was nice, but not having hot water and a working TV for the weekend was very inconvenient.

The room was just a mess, no phone or alarm clock in it. The AC was not working at all and for most of my stay there was no hot water. The staff said “run the water for 10 minutes because the boiler broke” or something along those lines, well I ran it for close to 30 and still no hot water. Stains on sheets and the door has a gap in it when it’s closed and locked. Overall just a bad experience. Will not return. Only upside was nice staff for the most part

When we arrived, we noticed several homeless people outside the property. The hotel and parking lot was fenced in. After checking in with a very friendly lady, we went to our room and it had a terrible odor and there were hairs all in the bed and on the floor and in the shower. Went down to the front desk and another lady assisted us. She did not apologize or speak to us simply activated a card and handed it to us. We found our room went into that one and it was the same situation, but the odor was not bad. Went back to the desk and had to wait five minutes for somebody to see we were there. We were given another room by that same lady with no apology. The third room was the same as the first two. Hairs throughout the bed that looked like they had just remade the bed and not cleaned the sheets. The comforter was missing off of one of the beds and there were hairs in the bathroom and on the floor. We went back down to the desk and the first lady that assisted us apologized. We told her we just wanted to cancel our reservation and she obliged.

As a human being going through one of the hardest times of our lives after a fire I felt so mistreated by the general manager who literally struggles to do her job and makes things harder for a customer like not being able to put my card in for incidentals and having to take 30 dollars in lyfts just to get a prepaid card only for that not working but the staff member just starting was able to do so in 30 seconds We were not allowed to renew which all staff felt it was absolutely unfair and ridiculous we had no where to go and with our resources used we had to wait for a ride coming from out of town the staff welcomed us to sit in the lobby as it was below 20 degrees and a blizzard type conditions the general manager made it her business to call and make us wait in the sliding front doors then she personally came and made us leave with small minor children in that less then 20 degrees weather I have stayed at candle wood and never ever had my experience been this way and after careful review reading the reviews and the reply s back they need to have a new manager in place this place will not keep business with her manors alone not to mention the cost and area they are in. Also no breakfast for weekend stays not a safe area lots of drug use in this area and the fence feels like a prison the room was left clean and I have yet to receive my deposit they also charged for an exempt service dog and refused my papers I have been told to contact a lawyer in the mistreatment alone.

I reserved a room with a roll-in shower through Expedia because of my wheelchair bound wife and received confirmation. At check-in I asked to be sure and was told the room one. However as is too often the case, the room had a bathtub instead. The bath had multiple grab bars for which we were grateful. Still, transferring was tenuous and I need to insist on the shower. With that and the exception of a very icy parking lot, we were pleased with the hotel. The room was very clean, and the suite offered a lot for the money. The staff was accommodating, and the bathroom was spacious, however the bedroom itself was tight for a wheelchair "accessible" room. The description on Expedia states that there is a restaurant inside the hotel. That is not the case anymore but there are several nearby. All in all, the hotel is a good value.

Room was very nice but the lighting was terrible - no decent bright areas, especially if you are looking for them to get ready in. Also didn’t get the room I booked - booked kind suite with pull out couch. Got there and it wasn’t available, was offered regular two queen room or queen suite with a pullout recliner that was so small it wasn’t suitable for sleeping on. Hotel itself has been beautifully renovated but the parking lot was a mess. Staff was very professional and kind.
