About this property
Historic Mushroom House, Earl Young’s Home overlooking Lake MI! New AC!
A Living Work of Art Across from Lake Michigan
Built on the knoll that inspired its design, this distinctive stone house overlooks Lake Michigan—the final mushroom house Earl Young designed and built for himself and his wife, Irene. Young lived here for more than 30 years.
Earl Young’s iconic Charlevoix homes are known for their organic shapes, native stone, low-slung profiles, and imaginative details. This house offers a particularly personal expression of his work, with its original, unaltered design, beautifully crafted stone fireplaces, distinctive U-shaped layout, and hidden cabinets throughout. Every room reveals something new, making it feel less like a vacation rental and more like a living piece of architectural history.
The home sits high on one of Charlevoix’s most beautiful bluffs, directly across from Lake Michigan and the iconic red lighthouse. The beach is just minutes away on foot, and downtown Charlevoix—with its boutiques, restaurants, bars, and parks—is also within easy walking distance. Guests often describe the setting as “completely ideal.”
The home has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. One end features a bedroom with two twin beds and its own bathroom. The other has a queen bedroom and a king bedroom, with a bathroom between them. The queen bedroom is a walkthrough room to the private king bedroom, with a privacy curtain separating it from the hallway. A third bathroom adds convenience.
Large front windows bring Lake Michigan into the living space, while the private back deck feels like a treetop retreat—three stories above the street and sheltered among the trees. It’s perfect for morning coffee, an afternoon glass of wine, or simply enjoying the quiet.
Inside, you’ll find a fully equipped kitchen with coffee, spices, and cooking essentials; beautiful linens and beach towels; high-speed WiFi; Sonos; a Samsung Frame TV with streaming; and two original stone gas fireplaces.
The house has been lovingly maintained and thoughtfully prepared for guests, offering modern comfort without losing the character and craftsmanship of Earl Young’s original design.
The beach is across the street. Downtown is a short walk. And the house offers a rare opportunity to stay inside the final mushroom house Earl Young created for himself.

Location was great, walking to the beach, shops and restaurants.
The house was awesome, unique, clean, comfortable, very nice all around.
We would love to come back for another memorable vacation.
We were amazed by the property! This house is a piece of Charlevoix history. Our stay was comfortable and a privilege in this one of a kind residence. Thevowner gave us the ifo we needed to access tge home and enjoy our stay.
We loved this mushroom house. It had everything we could have needed - very comfortable beds, linens, kitchen well stocked, and that patio!!! We love Charlevoix & this house was close to town. We walked everywhere. Would definitely come back.
The historic, unique house is a treat. Yes, it has its quirks (low ceilings, some small rooms) but the living room and patio are great gathering places, and the location is unbeatable.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful mushroom house! How interesting to see/experience Earl Young’s residence! Shawn was a great host! He was very responsive and accommodating! The home was clean, organized and very comfortable. The location was perfect and the views were lovely!
This house was amazing! It made our yearly girl's trip to Charlevoix extra special. The home had such unique and extraordinary architecture it made you feel all the history and magic of Charlevoix. The homes decor and amenities were first class-JUST WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!
What an amazing property! We had the best girls weekend, touring the area , walking the beach, and then rafting the Jordan River.
We loved loved loved this house! So much charm.
Plenty of room for the 6 of us girls!
Also close to town so we could walk to local shops and dining.
This charming property has it all! It’s in a great location, the view is incredible, and the owner has thought of everything to elevate your stay to ensure everyone is comfortable and even feels a little spoiled (that fireplace is the thing of dreams). On top of that, you’re literally staying in a place with such a special historical significance, but with enough modern touches to make it feel that much more special. We are already making plans to make a visit to this house a yearly tradition.
The history, the comfort, the cleanliness, the location, the decor…all were perfect. This is a very charming place to stay. You feel the history but with all the modern conveniences. We particularly liked the magnificent living room fireplace and the outdoor patio area. Communication with the host and information provided were all wonderful. We enjoyed exploring the town and loved Terry’s for dinner and Smoke on the Water for breakfast. We were disappointed in the Weathervane Restaurant but loved seeing Earl’s fireplace. We would definitely love to come back.
This was a great place for us. The mid-Century modern appointments are beautiful and the location is excellent -- close to town and steps away from the Lake Michigan beach and pier. But the bedroom configuration is extremely odd and won't work for many groups. We had two couples and one stayed in the bedroom with the twin beds to achieve privacy. Please read the property description carefully before you book.
Lovely property/home; Plenty of room. Kitchen was a little cozy. But it was hardly an issue. Lots of unique details to enjoy. This was the 3rd mushroom house I've stayed at. It did not disappoint the slightest.

Beautiful location! Lovely historic street!
We enjoyed our stay and the uniqueness of the mushroom house. Beautiful lake view! Quiet lovely street.
Many “ mushroom tour” buses went by daily and were interested in our house…kind of fun at first but became a little annoying. We felt we couldn’t go outside without someone looking at us.
Also only the master bedroom was air conditioned. We had two couples so one stayed in master and the other in the bedroom on the other end of the house. It wasn’t air conditioned…our week of stay the temperatures were in the upper 80s. They had many fans running when we got there but unfortunately we never could really get the house temp on one side below 78. Very warm and humid inside.
Overall we enjoyed our stay in the mushroom house…couldn’t beat the lovely historic street and beautiful view of Lake Michigan.
What a wonderful home to be able to be able to spend a week in. Breathtaking views right from the front door looking out to Lake Michigan. We loved watching the sun set each night. We would definitely stay here again!
The house has so many unique characteristics, it was a fun stay! The fireplace was lovely, we had relaxing evenings in, enjoying the beauty of inside and outside. Seeing the lighthouse from the living room is cool. There were gorgeous sunsets while we were there. We ate out so didn't need to use the kitchen much. Highly recommend Weathervane for dinner and Blondies Coffee!
