With a stunning coastal promenade and picturesque islets surrounded by reefs, La Paz is one of the most striking municipalities in Baja California. The inner city is made up of colonial architecture and museums that reveal its fascinating history. Explore the coast and discover the past of a city formerly occupied by the United States.

Amble along the Malecón coastal boardwalk for a sense of the local culture. Study the Dove of Peace Monument and its base consisting of pointed shapes. It is among the 16 sculptures adding artistry to the pleasant promenade. Restaurants here serve shrimp tacos and other seafood. Spot the giant whale replica that appears to have smashed through the brick wall of the Whale Museum.

Anticipate arid conditions in the desert city, with cool nights and hot days. Head to the downtown region and browse the stalls and small shops selling local handicrafts made from seashells and wood. Admire the historic architectural buildings surrounding Constitution Square, which has an elegant bandstand and a fountain with an intriguing rock sculpture.

For a change of scenery, join a boat tour of Isla Espiritu Santo. Here, you can explore the serene beaches and scuba dive and snorkel with sea lions. These creatures tend to be more active and playful in spring and early summer.

The city is on the southern tip of the Baja California strip on the western coast of Mexico. Fly to the General Manuel Márquez de León Airport and get a taxi to the city center. Rent a car to get around the large city and reach the islands via boat tours.
