The Grand Hotel occupies a listed building with a mix of “modern” updated rooms and older “classic” rooms. We found it charming, clean, convenient for walking to York Minster, the city walls, and several museums. It is however, struggling a bit to maintain its aging infrastructure.
During our 9 day stay at the Grand, we changed rooms 3 times for a variety of reasons. Suffice it to say the staff—particularly Agra at the front desk— worked diligently to find us a comfortable room with a king bed, working air con, and a bathroom with double sinks.
We enjoyed cocktails in the 1906 lounge, a cream tea in The White Rose, and a late dinner from room service. The food and beverage were all good quality, if a bit over-priced.
While we encountered a few difficulties during our stay, we enjoyed the city of York and The Grand well enough to extend our stay an additional 4 nights.
As with most classic, 5-star hotels it is the people like Agra at the front desk who make or break the total experience. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and hope to return in the future. We would recommend a stay here to those who enjoy a classic, old-world style hotel, with thoughtful, professional staff.
