The food is excellent as well, although it’s worth noting that both the dinner and breakfast are very generous meals - best not to eat too much beforehand! "A large and very well featured Ryokan (traditional inn) style hotel near the historic village of Shirakawa Go. Very helpful staff, I appreciated the bus from Shirakawa Go bus station to the hotel. Without your bags (or perhaps with), it’s walkable in about 25 minutes. Additionally if you request it, you can get the bus back at 08:30 which got me onto the onward early bus to Kanazawa at 08:50 which was much appreciated. The hotel has separated male/female onsen as well as two private onsen you could share with your partner, if you wish. Familiarise yourself with both ryokan and onsen customs if you haven’t done either before! Take your shoes off at the door and don’t let them touch the elevated surface. There is a small grocery store about 25 mins walk away but also one in the service station up the hill near the hotel. The only thing I didn’t like was that the air conditioning was set to default to lower limit to 22 degrees, meaning if you set it to 20 for sleep it would change back to 22 instantly, meaning I was waking up in heat. An air conditioning system that is set too high like this, cannot be properly used in summer. Everything else was fantastic."

"This was our first time at a ryokan. The staff and facilities ensure a tranquil and relaxing visit. When one first checks in the guest is treating like royalty with beautiful robe (I cannot remember the correct robe), tea, and an explanation of the facilities. The room was an apartment. Lovely views, The onsen in the room and the view of mountains was luxurious and calming. The chef is a master. Although I do not eat most of the dishes, the chef prepares dishes so that I could eat. The steamed seabream was one of the most delicious meals I have ever had. There is a tea service available which is also quite nice. A short distance from the Onsen are trails through the mountains and around a lake."

"Wataya = WOW! From the second we arrive... I'm so happy Aaron chose this place. The staff is a family that has owned and operated this wonderful house for 7 generations! We chill in the onsen chatting loudly as we are the only guests today, return to the room to relax looking at the garden during twilight. Dinner is served! We did a poor job at informing them of my friend's restricted diet... The proprieter is so generous! She grabs a frozen pizza from her home to feed my buddy... I'm stuffed by beer, pickled vegetables, traditional soup, local river caught fish displayed alive on skewers then COOKED TO DEATH! Followed by BEAR MEAT! Literal apex predator of the forest in my mouth. It's pretty great. Delightful sliced steak then green tea mousse with some fruit for dessert. We have to hit the onsen before bed. So pleasantl I hit the onsen tub alone, bodywash, hop in and acclimate while watching YouTube. Some pleasuring women, some women behavior, some news. Breakfast is served at 8 as requested. I eat alone as Aaron doesn't want anything they have. Pickled vegetables, river fish, light soup, egg, grilled salmon, local orange and strawberry with fresh rice. Rice milk, water and great coffee! I love this place so much... Return to my room, we take a selfie with the garden, pack up and check out. The proprieter and his mother see us off in a taxi."

"We would highly, highly recommend Ichirino Kogen Hotel Roan. Dinner was phenomenal - some of the best food we had on our one month trip travelling around Japan. The variety of dishes, the freshness of the food, the beautiful presentation, and the harmony of the flavor combinations stood out to us. It was really delicious. The restaurant itself was comfortable and lovely. It was a little cold at first, but the grill warmed the room while the sake warmed us from the inside :) The service at the front desk was perfect, it could not have possibly been better. It was the friendliest, warmest reception we've received. In fact, the entire staff was the pinnacle of good hospitality. From the front desk to the wait staff, everyone was amazing to interact with. Those who didn't speak English at all still made such an effort to answer our questions and help us. Everyone had a friendly, cheerful disposition - it genuinely felt like they were happy we were there and that they took pride in their amazing service. We loved the private baths, especially the outdoor open air one. The hot water was the perfect temperature and it left our skin feeling incredible. The lobby was great - it felt very cozy, warm, and welcoming. Like we were in our own home. The robot mascot was so much fun and we delighted in interacting with him and watching others (especially the children staying in the hotel, who seemed to find him magical) interacting with him. The location is fantastic - not even a two minute "
