Suwon Hwaseong Museum

Suwon Hwaseong Museum featuring interior views as well as children
Get a closer look at the history and architecture of Hwaseong Fortress and the king who commanded it when you visit this informative museum inside the complex.

The Suwon Hwaseong Museum gives a deep insight into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hwaseong Fortress and its history and cultural significance. Learn about the fortress and its reigning ruler, King Jeongjo. The museum captures the fascinating heritage of 18th-century Korea and presents it through engaging exhibitions and displays.

Note the sleek architecture of the modern museum, which contrasts against the Joseon-era design of its subject. On the first floor, you’ll find a series of exhibition rooms. Head to the Central Exhibition Hall and begin your exploration of the museum’s displays. Follow the expertly curated displays, which focus on the different facets of the fortress. Learn about the Korean style of wooden architecture in the Joseon Dynasty, as well as similar styles in Japan and China.

Go upstairs and check out the Hwaseong Culture Center to learn about Joseon-era traditions. As the fortress was built in honor of King Jeongjo’s late father, it includes a theme on commemorating family. Make your way into the Hwaseong Construction Hall to learn about the military innovation that went into the fort’s inspired design. The displays in this hall detail the specific purpose of particular design elements, such as watchtowers, gateways, bastions and walls.

The museum contains a Children’s Experience Center, which helps youngsters to interpret the culture and history of the Hwaseong Fortress. Outside, find a special open-air exhibition that details innovation in the fort’s construction. For a deeper understanding of the exhibits, use an audio guide. These devices are available in English and can be collected for free from the information desk.

The Suwon Hwaseong Museum is located alongside the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in the heart of historic Suwon. Purchase a ticket to enter the museum or take advantage of the combination tickets that provide access to other historic sites and museums in the fort complex. Free admission is sometimes available. Check the museum’s website. The museum is closed on Mondays.
