The Igreja de São Roque was the earliest Jesuit church in the Portuguese world, or anywhere else. It served as the Society’s home church in Portugal for over 200 years, before the Jesuits were expelled from that country.
It was one of the few buildings in Lisbon to survive the 1755 Earthquake relatively unscathed.
