I am sharing this experience to help those travelers who, like me, were taken in by the photos, description, and rave reviews of this property. My son and I were booked for two nights, but stayed for only one and left as early as possible.
The day before, we followed instructions and confirmed our arrival and were told the keys were on the table and to make ourselves at home. Despite this, the owner was taken by surprise that we were there and asserted that we owed her more money as we were a day early. It was up to us to contact the rental company and confirm that we were booked for two days and were expected. Things were off to such an awkward start that I left a message while downtown asking whether we were actually welcome to stay.
The unit is in a suburb of Portland and is not ten minutes from downtown if you factor in city traffic. It is a basement apartment in an old building. It did have wifi and television, all of which worked well. There are antiques, as stated, and a garden. However it was also dirty, damp, and had spiders. There are exposed vents and pipes throughout. The renters above stayed up until 3 am and you could hear every footstep, toilet flush, and muffled conversation. They did laundry late into the night in the common hallway. We also had some concerns about the safety aspects of the unit.
When we voiced our opinions/concerns the owner of this unit did not respond as one would expect. She was belligerent and insisted I was the only dissatisfied renter she'd ever had. Though only a few steps away, she did not come over to see what we spoke of; in fact we did not meet. Instead, our host resorted to name calling and suggested that if we did not like the unit we should leave, though she offered no refund. She deemed us to be people who could not be pleased under any circumstance. That is wholly untrue. My family has traveled all over the world and rented many times. As recently as last week we were in Arcata, CA and I left a rave review for that property on VRBO. This was a two week road trip and we were in various inns, rentals, and hotels and were pleased with each of them, with this one exception.
It is impossible to convey the impact this had on us as travelers in a new city. It is important to consider all aspects before making travel decisions. I very much hope that anyone who takes a chance in renting this property fares better than we did.
