An amazing traditional Japanese inn in at the top of Mt. Mitake. Warm atmosphere, great views, and a pleasant staff helped make this one the highlights on my recent trip to Japan.
Unusual place.
We enjoyed our stay in the mountains - it felt so good to get out of the hussle & bustle of Tokyo for a day or two.
This place was in a beautiful location with fantastic views. They allowed us to leave our bags before check in & after check out so we didn’t have to carry them around with us. We went on a 2 hour beautiful hike.
We only met the lady owner, but she was very friendly and helpful.
Our room was traditional style and very large but basic. If you are OK with “rustic” - this is your place. If you want modernity & comfort, this might not be for you.
The host was very friendly and accommodating. The ryokan was up on a mountain and there was lots to see. The futons were very comfortable and the in-house breakfast was amazing. We really enjoyed the stay there and would definitely visit again.
Sehr nette Menschen und gastfreundliches Shukubo..
Out of my recent trip to Japan there were two places that really made things special for me, this stay was one of them. We arrived very late on our first night, we barely made it to the last rail car up the mountain. when we made it to the stop the hotel owners were literally waiting for us at the rail building since they didn't want us getting lost in the snowy night. The food was super tasty, I HIGHLY recommend their dinner plate. Also, make sure to take a dip in their wooden bath, that thing will wash away any difficulty that may be troubling your mind. The rooms were clean, the staff was friendly, and the hotel itself was very traditional, not to mention the scenery was gorgeous.
I wanted a less expensive option to going to the mountains and seeing some temples than going to Kyoto or Nikko. Mitake-san is under 2000 yen and 2-3 hours by train (compare to Kyoto which can be 10 times that!!). I wanted to stay in a temple-type lodging or ryokan. This fit the bill nicely. The room was gorgeous and the robes and onsen (which I had completely to myself, being the only woman staying there) were so relaxing. I opted to eat at the hotel and the amount and quality of the food was just unbelievable! I didn't opt for the am waterfall purification however because it would prevent me from being in the onsen one last time!
This was my one "expensive" day out (the rest of my lodgings averaged $10 a day) so for me it was good value in one of the most expensive cities on earth.

Japanese Traditional Accomodation
The hotel is a traditional style hotel with a public Japanese style bath. One for males and one for female. Families can reserve the use of one and shower together. The rooms have a very scenic view and are futons in tatami mats. The rooms can be very cold during cooler months and the use of personal kerosene heaters that are provided in the rooms helps, but at the cost if fumes in the room, The staff are the owners and go out of their way to make you comfortable. The meals are reasonable and excellent. This is an excellent place if you enjoy hiking and travel light.
