Quiet rural Maine cabin near Bigelow Preserve, Flagstaff Lake and Sugarloaf
Highland Hideaway
Nestled deep in the tranquil Western Maine Woods, this rural retreat offers peace and privacy, with snow-covered landscapes in winter, lush forest in summer and the always relaxing sounds of the nearby streams. It is one of the few locations in the area that remains open during winter, offering cozy amenities and a welcoming atmosphere for guests seeking a seasonal retreat.
This small abode is perfect for two but can accommodate up to 4 guests. It is equipped with heating and air conditioning, ensuring a pleasant stay every season. The cabin stands alone, off the deck, at the back of our property, with its own yard, campfire ring and driveway. Thanks to the sturdy metal roof over the deck, you can enjoy grilling and cooking meals outdoors in almost any weather conditions. The screenhouse invites you to unwind outdoors and enjoy your meals without worrying about pesky bugs. Summers bring entertaining hummingbirds, and the gentle sounds of the surrounding crystal-clear streams, adding a touch of magic to the experience.
Popular things to do here: Winter: snowmobiling, skiing/snowboarding Sugarloaf, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing. Spring/Summer/ Fall: hiking, mountain/fat biking, bird watching, kayaking, fishing, leaf peeping, hunting.
Skiers and snowboarders: Sugarloaf Mountain a scenic 45-minute drive from this location.
Snowmobilers: There are snowmobile trails nearby, and trail access from this road. Check with the local snowmobile clubs for trail access, locations and conditions.
Hikers and Bikers: We are a short distance from East side of Bigelow Preserve, Appalachia Trail, Flagstaff Hut and the East side of Flagstaff Lake. It is a 12-mile drive north from the cabin to the Flagstaff Trailhead.
The road to the property runs parallel to scenic Route 201 (Old Canada Road) and Route 27, which passes through Carrabassett Valley, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the west side of Flagstaff Lake. Our road is paved, plowed as necessary and open during the winter months. GPS may be a little confusing when looking at the area roads: many of the gravel roads off this road are only accessible by snowmobile during the winter months, and most comfortably navigated by AWD and 4WD when they are accessible. For those familiar with the area, Carriage Road is no longer accessible.
The outdoor cooking area includes a gas grill, four-burner gas cook top, large toaster oven, large electric skillet and a large patio cooler. The picnic table is just off the deck. The kitchenette inside has a refrigerator, Keurig and 12 cup coffee makers, microwave, crockpot, toaster oven, dishes, cutlery, kitchen utensils and tools, mixing bowls and pans. Bring your food & beverages.
We provide bed linens, pillows, blankets and towels. The adult-size bunk has a lower bunk that sleeps two people with a child-size upper bunk, and another twin bunk across the room. There is a multiple device charging port for your devices, WIFI TV, DVD player, movies and an Echo Dot for tunes. The cabin has an electric fireplace for additional warmth and ambiance. There is a full bathroom with a shower. There is also an outside shower, open once the weather permits. The screenhouse offers outdoor seating for 4 and can be a great place to keep gear out of the winter elements. We provide some firewood for the campfire if we have it and always appreciate it when folks bring some Maine firewood with them. We do not offer laundry service, but there are laundromats in the two nearby towns.
Due to the size of the cabin and available resources, we are unable to host more than four guests at a time. Please ensure your group does not exceed four people, as we are unable to accommodate larger parties. Thank you for your understanding.

Great stay, wonderful and friendly hosts. Only note (and very minor note) is that the cabin is closer to their main house than it seems to be on the listing. It's a kind of detached guest house, but only a few feet from their house. That being said, they were very gracious and left us with space to enjoy a quiet cabin getaway; I saw Lois once at the beginning of the stay (she was very friendly and thorough) and then didn't see anyone else the entire time. Wonderful place and area.
Sure! Here's a polished VRBO review based on your notes:---**5 Stars – Peaceful Getaway!**I had a wonderful stay at this beautiful property. It was private, quiet, and incredibly relaxing—exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor kitchen was a standout feature—well-equipped and perfect for enjoying meals in the fresh air. Lois was such a kind and thoughtful host. Highly recommend for anyone looking to unwind in a peaceful setting!
Property was very easy to find, easy to get to, and very relaxing. Everything works great, it’s a very peaceful area, and the hosts are absolutely lovely!
My adult son took what ended up being a solo camping trip up to Maine and back. This was one of his spots to stay during his trip. He really liked it. Host were very kind and friendly. Place was clean and as described. It was a great base for him
We had stayed at Lois and Paul's cabin last year and had such a nice time in the area and with their hospitality that we returned again this year. The cabin really is unbeatable in terms of amenities, cleanliness and care, and overall location and scenery. Would love to return in the future!
This was a great small rental for my Sugar Loaf weekend adventure. Appreciate the affordability for a rustic feeling cabin with lots of great amenities. I would stay here again for another Sugar Loaf skiing weekend. Thanks Paul & Lois.
The Hideaway is a very comfortable, well-outfitted, and serene location. Lois and Paul were communicative and welcoming, and have thought of everything.
Highly recommend this place!
My group and I had an amazing stay! The cabin is very clean and cozy and has all of the equipment you could need to enjoy your stay. Plus, they have an awesome fire pit right next to the cabin! The hosts were wonderful and kindly offered us some Jambalaya they had made. It was delicious. We will definitely be staying here again in the near future! Highly recommended!
This is the second time i have stayed at Highland Hideaway. Paul & Lois are AWESOME HOSTS. Their place is in a perfect location for my needs. It was immaculate as usual and Lois always throws in a few personal touches. I highly recommend staying here. I'll be back next year.
Great little cottage with everything you need for your Maine get away to Carrabassett valley. perfect setting to unwind and get away. The host are amazingly kind and welcoming, providing you with everything you'll need
I stayed with Lois and Paul for four nights, and it was a fantastic experience. Their home is cozy, clean, and well-equipped with everything you could possibly need. The hosts are incredibly friendly and accommodating. The location is perfect—peaceful and surrounded by nature, offering the quietest environment you can imagine. At the same time, it’s quite convenient, with just a 40-minute drive to Sugarloaf Mountain and about 20 minutes to nearby restaurants and grocery stores. I will definitely be returning!
Beautiful home right across from the river. About a 45 min drive to sugarloaf for you ski bums. The host goes above and beyond to make you feel at home there with some freshly baked goods. Overall a great stay!
The perfect location to relax and put your feet up. The little cabin is ideal for a couple or small group. We really enjoyed our stay. The under cover outdoor kitchen is fun to cook in and we played many games of cribbage in the screened in porch. Definitely check out the stream across the street! It was also lovely to sit by the fire in the evening. We will go back for sure!
Our stay with Lois and Paul in their amazing cabin was wonderful.
The acccommodation was top notch and there wasn't a single thing that hadn't been thought of. The self catering facilities were the best we've ever had - 100%.
The area was beautiful and peaceful and we were privileged to see moose on the back roads one evening at dusk and bears are often seen in the area.
A great location, friendly owners and an amazing cabin - I hope we'll be back Kathryn and Jon
We were welcomed with warm smiles, warm homemade custard, and a dozen fresh eggs from their chickens. The cottage was perfect for our needs, very clean and well appointed. It was a perfect respite from the chilly cold mornings and the cottage remained warm and cozy on nights in the low teens. We will most certainly be back! Thank you Lois and Paul!
Thank you so much for a great experience! Wish I’d had more time to explore the beautiful property you guys have , I’ll have to come back (hopefully with a lot more snow!) I also did locate my ski goggles, they had slipped under the front seat of my car thankfully! Thanks again for a wonderful stay!
