Mennello Museum of American Art

Mennello Museum of American Art showing a park
Approachable exhibitions and dynamic programs make fine art family-friendly at this small museum, which focuses on local and American artists.

See a kaleidoscopic snapshot of America when you visit the Mennello Museum of American Art, where works by historical and contemporary artists combine with engaging, interactive public programs. Both adults and kids will enjoy a quick stop at this small museum.

The core of the Mennello collection includes colorful pieces by 20th-century painter Earl Cunningham. A self-taught folk artist, Cunningham was famous for fantastical landscape paintings of the American East Coast. Look for quirky details, including bright yellow skies and out-of-place animals.

Enjoy the museum’s rotating exhibitions, featuring a diverse collection of both established and emerging artists. In this former private home, the space is intimate, but the museum hosts wide-ranging traveling exhibitions from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, as well as works from the City of Orlando’s permanent collection.

Head outside to the lovely Marilyn L. Mennello Sculpture Garden, where the annual Grounds For Exhibitions show displays large works by nationally renowned American sculptors year round. The sculpture garden is always open to the public and offers walking paths with stunning views of Lake Formosa. Look for “The Mayor,” a live 350-year-old oak tree covered in Spanish moss.

The museum prioritizes art education. Visit on the second Sunday of each month for Free Family Funday, including art projects and free tours. Various programs throughout the year, including lectures by famous artists, arts-and-crafts workshops and docent-led tours, help visitors of all ages engage with the art. ASL tours and Expressive Tours for the Blind, guided by docents trained to describe works in vivid detail, are also available.

The Mennello Museum of American Art is part of Loch Haven Cultural Park, which includes museums, theaters and a dining and commercial district. Reach the museum via the Orlando Urban Trail, a 3-mile (5-kilometer) biking and walking trail connecting to downtown Orlando. Use the free parking lot or walk here from the Florida Hospital Health Village SunRail station.

The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from late morning to late afternoon, and Sunday afternoons. Purchase admission tickets and get discounts for children and students. Children under age 6 have free entry.
