Nearby Oxclose Wood has surfaced trails and steep climbs rewarded with spectacular views, while Sherwood Forest – within 9 miles of the doorstep – has walks to suit all ages and abilities. Close to Robin Hood’s infamous Major Oak hideout, there’s a Go Ape tree-top adventure centre plus cycle and segway hire facilities. For further challenging hikes the Peak District sits to the west. Step back in time at Elizabethan Hardwick Hall (9 miles) – it’s en route to the neighbouring towns of Matlock and Matlock Bath, which offer a wealth of family-friendly attractions. Travel the Dale Road between the two and cable cars will transport you to the Heights of Abraham hilltop park. Alternatively, visit Crich Tramway Village (17 miles), which offers scenic rides, a period village scene, woodland walk and sculpture trail. Sherwood Forest (9 miles) and Clumber Park (10 miles) are also popular family days out.
