Welcome to the Chester at Half Moon. The name honors our father who provided the privilege of sharing this land and aptly describes the face of Half Moon Mountain seen from the property. Check out our reviews at our companion cabin (an adjoining tract) at the Dudley at Half Moon, or, enjoy both properties for multi-family vacations!

This updated two story modest cabin is perfect for your getaway! The cabin features an open floor plan and is perfect for a couple's romantic weekend, a group of friends, or for family gatherings! The 17 acre grounds offer you plenty of space to unplug and enjoy a cabin version of "glamping".

Our Vision:

Stop at Strasburg Food Lion or Woodbine Farm Market for groceries on the way in and cook nice dinners in a fully equipped kitchen. We provide spices and some condiments so you don't have to. Enjoy dinner on the covered front porch. Make homemade pasta with the pasta maker. Or unwind with a glass of wine (a complimentary bottle is provided) on the spacious front porch.

The next morning, relax with french press coffee or expresso (we provide!) on the front porch at sun up and watch the deer graze after a sound night of sleep in our comfortable and luxurious beds. You'll never get a better night's sleep. Or walk the property as the sun is coming up - it truly is stunning.

Put dinner in the crockpot and spend the day at a local winery or enjoy hiking on the trail just outside the door. Vance's Cove is a short walk away. Paddy Gap (a stocked trout stream - please check the VDWR website) runs through the property - bring fish home for dinner on the grill. Visit Shenandoah National Park or the Archery Camp not far away.

After dinner, lie around in the evening in our fully reclining seating to watch movies or play games. Sling TV allows access to a full selection of channels and to keep up with the world - although you won't want to. An air hockey table and dart board provides hours of fun for the competitive. Or settle in with a good read from our stocked book case.

Take a walk for a gorgeous view of Half Moon; first thing in the morning with fog rolling off the fields (coffee in hand) is the MOST spectacular.

Nature and wildlife are all around. Listen to the whippoorwills call at night, or view the brightly lit stars. Eagles, hawks and bluebirds to name a few. Fishers (a mustelid mammal) and turkeys add to the list of wildlife not seen in the city!

The water sometimes (rarely) has a sulfuric smell and although treated, we personally prefer not to drink for coffee, drinking, etc.... Please be prepared to bring water and paper products you will need - we do share what we have but only in base amounts. Alternately, feel free to leave yours behind.

Please know we are a family who enjoys sharing our property with you and ask you return the property to us in the same condition as it was provided. We ask you remove your own garbage. Because this ask has not always been respected, we do ask for a trash removal fee if you do not. We also ask to please do not bring pets or invite additional guests, if not included in the reservation. Due to the remote location, we do have a security device on the front exterior of the home to monitor the driveways.

The property is gorgeous and quiet so allow the stresses of the city to fall away. You will hate to leave and want to return soon - just 1 hour from Northern Virginia!

Great stay at nice cabin in the mountains

The place was beautiful. Well decorated and comfortable. Very nice kitchen. We enjoyed the woods and the trail behind the house. Got to fly fish in the stream about 1m from the property.

Very comfortable cabin

This cabin is very comfortable and well equipped. And Carla, the owner was very responsive during our stay and made sure we were up to date on our needs. I highly recommend this cabin since it is so private and has a large front porch to relax on. Thank you Carla for everything you did to make our stay more enjoyable!

Looks like a cabin on the outside feels like a comfortable and inviting home on the inside! We had a great time. Everything we needed was provided from cooking meals, entertainment and comfy places to sleep.

Great getaway

We loved our vacation! If it could give the location more than 5 stars I would. It was absolutely perfect! The only thing that could have made our stay better was a washer and dryer to use, but overall it was a great place to stay with our kids.

What a view!

Very cool house. Nice and secluded. Really enjoyed the hiking trail and visits to Strasberg for dinner. If you’re looking for a calm respite with gorgeous Mountain View’s then this home is a great pick.

Beautiful home

We had a wonderful time on our family getaway. There are many hiking trails located near this home. The home is very clean with comfortable beds. The front porch is large and very peaceful. Check in was very easy and the owners are just a text away if you have any questions. They were very responsive.

A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH FOR SURE!

It is a very remote and quiet location. Internet and TV access was great for being in such a remote location. The silence is almost scary but a welcome relief for us where our main residence is in an urban area with sirens and car noise is common. The property was clean and well maintained will stay there again next year if available to us. It is situated halfway between Strausburg Va and Wardensville WV and makes access for things to do good when not at property.

Place to unplug

This was our second time staying at this cabin and we loved it as much as the first time. It is a lovely place located in a very scenic area. There are plenty of hiking trails nearby and charming wineries all around. You are pretty close (45 minutes at the most) to cities. This is a great place to gather with others and relax and connect with nature.

A QUICK VISIT TO THE MOUNTAINS

We had to move to adjacent property due to a hornet's nest but found the house to be well stocked, Air conditioning was great. We found internet and satellite tv worked well for being located in such a remote location. It was unbelievably quiet surroundings. The property manager was exceptional and had answers to every question I threw at her. We plan to book again in the future.

lovely secluded getaway

We really appreciated the opportunity to unplug and be truly away from it all. In the past, we've stayed at listings that claim to be secluded, only to find there is another house next door or that the property is two minutes from a town. Here, instead the only sounds were birds and other wildlife (and our dogs!) It was lovely to be so tucked away but also have amenities like a full-service kitchen and plenty of space inside. Other than for exercise and to walk our dogs, we didn't leave the house! We recommend this spot to anyone looking for a similar chance to unwind.

Star Tannery Stay

Overall, a really nice area for relaxation and being one with nature. Really enjoyed the wildlife. Had bit of a difficulty with finding the right remotes for tv for the day we spent indoors. A bit cold in family room of finished basement but understandable with keeping the moisture at bay. Absolutely enjoyed our daily visitors of hummingbirds. I was so fascinated, I brought a hummingbird feeder for home use. Only major critique would be outdated condiments and processed/canned foods in cabinets (some dated back in 2007).

Very relaxing!

Our stay was wonderful! The host was very responsive when we had a question. There were 5 of us, 3 adults and 2 teens. The layout was perfect given our dynamics. Loved having 2 bedrooms/bathroom downstairs with a full living space for teens! The house was very clean and nicely presented inside and out. It had everything we needed, comfortable beds, a fully stocked kitchen, and plenty of space to spread out. We walked the property a few times and visited the Shenandoah National Park, Andy Guest Riverfront State Park, Strasburg, Woodstock, and Front Royal during our stay. All are accessible within 30-40 minutes or so...beautiful scenic drives no matter the direction you drive! Breathtaking actually.

Simply perfect!

Cabin, location, check-in, check-out and everything in between was absolutely perfect! Everything you may need you will find there and then some...! We had a wonderful time, lovely weather, nice and quiet! Kitchen was loaded! There was a bird nest in the back we made sure we don't disturb the future mommy. Hope the little ones are now hatched and growing happy! The only thing I needed extra was another towel.... We had one towel per person, but I have a long hair and I need two. We were looking for quiet recharge and relax time and we couldn't have possibly even dream of a better place! Thanks!

Peace and Quiet

I don't even know where to begin. This was exactly the reset my husband and I needed. From the moment we drove up to the cabin and walked inside, we felt so relaxed. We love the outdoors and for a weekend in December, it was quite warm. The breaks in the rain allowed us to walk the trail with our dogs. When the weather was not cooperative, it gave us the chance to curl up inside and watch a movie or play a game. It almost seemed as if the decor was meant for us. Our favorite color is green, we were married by Elvis in Vegas, we have a black lab, and Im a bird enthusiast. (I found and ordered that picture in the upstairs bathroom .) We look forward to booking another stay in the spring with our family. It had everything you could possibly need, and more.I wish I could leave pictures in my review. Our dogs loved this place as much as we did. They've been sleeping since we returned home 2 days ago. If you are thinking about this place, think no longer. Just do it! You won’t regret it! relaxed.

Perfect retreat spot

The property is excellent for a quiet week of reading, walking, thinking. The home is better than described: the kitchen was complete, the home comfortable, clean, clean, clean; a marvelous open air design; lovely front porch with a view to be photographed. Tall chairs that are comfortable to sit in, a swing, a simple but perfect charcoal grill. The king bed is the best, the couch, ideal. It rained and the sound on the roof was gentle; it was cool (50 degrees) and the house comfortable; it was warm (84 degrees) and the house was comfortable. Host immediately available by text. The place is in the country--but the directions given were exact. I drove my very low, very heavy Prius over the five small drainage ditches (three to five inches deep) with no problem. We shopped at Food Lion before arriving, brought our own drinking water. We will be back.
