Right on your doorstep is the Bairro Alto neighborhood, one of Lisbon’s most picturesque districts, dating back to the 16th century and traditionally a bohemian haven for the city’s artists and writers.


Located in the city center, step outside and walk just a few meters to discover this area of charming streets lined with pastel-colored buildings and a few pleasant restaurants and bars, but it’s best known for its garden with a terrace offering incredible views of the river.

The main shopping streets are Rua do Norte, Rua da Atalaia, and Rua Diário de Notícias, from which it’s easy to reach the São Pedro de Alcântara Promenade and two of the city’s most interesting churches: São Roque, with its magnificent Baroque interior, and the romantic Gothic ruins of the Carmo Church.

The main feature of this garden is the stone figure of Adamastor, a mythical sea monster from the epic poem “Os Lusíadas.” There are also pleasant cafés where locals go to admire the views of the sunrise and sunset over the Tagus River.

During the day, you can stroll through the quiet streets lined with colorful facades, featuring a wide selection of traditional and international restaurants, craft shops, gourmet stores, alternative boutiques, and music stores open until midnight.

At night, especially on weekends, the neighborhood undergoes a radical transformation; the streets fill with people, making it easy to make new friends of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles. It’s fun to stroll through the bustling streets with a drink in hand, enjoying the typically mild evenings and listening to the echoes of music reverberating through the streets from the famous clubs and fado bars.

Chiado is the surrounding neighborhood—an elegant and sophisticated area with excellent theaters, bookstores, cafés, antique jewelry shops, stores featuring national and international fashion designers, and the Armazéns do Chiado shopping center, among many other attractions.

Much of this area was destroyed in the 1988 fire, but it has since been restored. It remains Lisbon’s most beloved neighborhood, with reminders of its past as the center of the city’s intellectual life, where you can see statues of literary figures such as Fernando Pessoa, Luís de Camões, and Eça de Queiroz.

A short walk uphill brings you to Príncipe Real, a neighborhood known for its antique shops, home decor stores, and as the city’s gay district, with numerous bars and nightclubs. In the streets around the Jardim do Príncipe Real, if you head toward the river, you’ll find beautiful 19th-century villas and some of the city’s most peaceful spots, such as Praça das Flores.
