Through its range of intriguing exhibits the Kauai Museum pays homage to the Aloha traditions and the history of Kauai Island. The museum’s many artifacts are presented alongside informative plaques, revealing Hawaii’s rich history. Among the collections are artisanal works by local craftspeople, sculptors and artists. Stroll through the various galleries and admire the pieces. Learn about the geological formation of Hawaii, and the island of Kauai in particular, through the displays.

Follow the stories of the island, from early Hawaiian life up to Captain James Cook’s arrival here, the migration of cane workers and the reign of the archipelago’s monarchy.

Browse the range of photographs showing what Hawaii was like in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Watch a 1-hour movie about the royal family and other intriguing themes. In an outbuilding is the Story of Kauaiexhibit, which explores the cultures that shaped Hawaii. Learn about which movies were filmed on this island, from White Heat to Jurassic World.

The museum is known for its small gift shop, which sells a range of intriguing trinkets that are excellent souvenirs. The museum is located in the building of the former Lihue Library, a stone block structure decorated by arches and columns.

Note that the museum opens Monday through Saturday from morning until late afternoon. There is an entrance fee, with discounts for seniors and students. Young children enter for free.

The Kauai Museum is in the heart of Lihue in the southeastern corner of Kauai Island. It is a 5-minute drive west from Lihue Airport, which receives flights from several airports in Hawaii and mainland United States. Didn't actually get to go in, it was closed. Check hours before going. Has an entry fee, also a seniors rate

So much to see there and all of it is very special. Really want to go back and spend more time. Allow yourself plenty of time to see everything. Great gift shop too!

Went a few years ago, old movie equipment, interesting history, worth a visit. Orchid garden nearby.
