Having to walk through cigarette smoke from the staff smoking at the lobby entrance took the shine off things though. Idar-Oberstein itself is not what I expected. It's all a bit shabby, run-down and sad. In the centre we saw a lot of poverty, homelessness and on the street drinking which made it feel a little edgy and unsafe.
