  • A few kilometres downstream from Lake Taupo the river changes to some rapids for a short distance. When the rapids finish there is a drop which creates a waterfall. It all ends with this scene which is stunning. Only a 30 second walk from the car park to the river this shot was taken about a 5 minute walk further downstream on the main track at sunrise.

  • I would not usually consider a garden a must-see experience, but I am really glad a local told us to visit Hamilton Gardens. The experience of wandering through a maze of hedges that open into perfectly cultivated gardens plucked complete from other countries and other eras was quite possibly the closest I will ever come to feeling like Alice in Wonderland come to life. You never know what magical sight waits around the next bend in the path.

The check in reception desk is about a 4mins drive from actual room you’re staying in which wasn’t convenient at all. Arriving at the apartment, the carpet was filthy! It needed a major clean asap. We refused to walk around without shoes on because of this. The bathroom has no shades so you’re in full view to the outside when taking a shower at night despite having the privacy window, not acceptable. Back door didn’t completely close when shut which is a safety risk. Locks need a major upgrade. Room service needs improving. The beds were not made, and towels were not replaced. Quite a horrible stay, do not recommend.

The area it was in was very convenient but paying a breakables bond on a property that needed fixing in the first place was ridiculous. Luckily we took photos of what was already damaged when we first walk in. Place is in desperate need of a renovation

Comfortable Stay

The stay was comfortable & nice as the apartment was clean and very spacious. So close to the city and amenities of where we needed to be for the hockey tournament. Good customer service was given from checking in. It was a good place for the stay and days there we were there and reasonable priced.

Cheap and cheerful/nasty (depending on your mood)

Old block of flats now used for short stay accommodation (probably because the previous owner didn’t want to spend money bringing them up to healthy homes standards). The office is located offsite at another motel. Cheap and served the purpose of somewhere to sleep, but not much more than that

Do not stay here. Check in is off site at another hotel. The check in person was so rude. The hotel itself had wires hanging out the front, not enough cutlery, no dryer (as said full laundry), no washing detergent, weird shower that was half a meter off the ground, no couch to sit on. Cleaning staff tried to rush us out before checkout. Keep looking for something else!

We thought the unit could do with a serious makeover. Some of the paintwork is very worn. The shower enclosure step is quite high and dangerous for those whose mobility is compromised. A new shower would make a big difference.

Shower is a high step up to get into it, cold tap is actually the hot tap very dangerous. Rooms were cold even with the heat pump on all night, concrete walls by bed had to use pillows behind back when leaning on it. Queen size bed was hard, had to use single beds

Had to call noise control on the neighbouring properties several times. Also couldn’t get tv to work, rung reception to get someone who didn’t know what tv the property actually had. Parking was terrible also.

Checking in at the property was inconvenient, given that it was located at a separate property not overly close (driving distance) to where I had booked. The unit itself had a fine kitchen and facilities for that, and the sheets were clean but not really comfortable. No additional blankets were provided. The carpeting was terribly dirty (turned my socks dark grey), and the bathroom was awful - dirty floors and walls, and the shower has black mould all along the top. The door also didn't seem overly safe, with no option to use a deadbolt at night.

Check in was inconvenient going to another property, the shower was mouldy it was a cold room even with heater there were no extra blankets or pillows. Was super noisy with some sort of banging in pipes or something that kept us up all night. Will not return to this property.
