Flora and Botanical Garden Cologne

Flora Cologne showing a garden and a fountain
More than 10,000 species of plants line the paths that lead to a 19th-century mansion and events venue in the oldest and most iconic park in Cologne.

The Flora Cologne is a vast complex made up of an impressive events venue and a comprehensive botanical garden. It brings a feeling of utter tranquility to central Cologne, transporting you to other worlds via its tropical Palm House. Visit Flora Cologne to go on a leisurely stroll along the trails that pass through its fascinating and picturesque floral displays.

Admire the symmetrical layout of the park and its array of plants. Its centerpiece is the Flora building, which was renovated in the early 21st century, before reopening in 2014. Attend some of the concerts and exhibitions held in this active hub, where weddings, galas and conferences also take place. Stand in the garden and gaze up at the glass arches and tympanum of the edifice.

Appreciate the design of the Italian Renaissance garden. Near it are the fern garden, fragrance garden and heather garden. Inspect the large collections of magnolias and rhododendrons amid maple and coniferous trees.

In the Main Greenhouse, Small Tropical House and Subtropical House, intriguing plants exude the exoticism of far-flung, humid worlds. To experience drier climes, head to the Cactus House. Relax in the Mediterranean garden and sit by the pond. Watch the display of the fountain at the heart of the water basin.

Consider the long history of the garden. It dates back to the 1860s, when it was built as a replacement for a demolished set of gardens nearer the city center.

The Flora Cologne is a little inland from the Rhine River in the Riehl district of Cologne. Drive north from the city center for 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) to get here in about 10 minutes. You can also travel by bus or tram to the Riehl Zoo/Flora stop. Flora Cologne is free to enter and open daily year round from morning until sundown.

While in the area, visit the Claudius Therme, the Johannes Giesberts Park and the Sculpture Park Cologne.
