First the good points…location was excellent; central and near to a metro station. Rooms were clean and bed comfortable. Breakfast decent. However, this place is more of a hostel than a hotel. No reception desk as such. The rooms are small and furnished with cheap and poorly fitted fixtures. ( one shelf was hanging off the wall and the headboard was missing). Little storage space. Only a badly fitted hanging rail placed directly above a coffee machine! Staff seemed inexperienced, and breakfast was a lottery to see which items were missing. Spoons one day, glasses the next, bowls the following. Same with food… getting items replaced was painfully slow! A lot of the crockery was chipped. Only used the room for shower, sleep and breakfast. So it suited our needs…just!

I would highly recommend this stay for anybody! Alex the host was so friendly and accommodating. We arrived before check in and he allowed us to come in early and drop off our luggage and gave us a tour of the property. Breakfast was nice and we even met his dog Luna :-). We were a block away from a portion of the Christmas markets and about 8 minutes from all the downtown shops and sights. Stop looking and just stay here!

Dominating the horizon of Mechelen with its 98 metres, the 15th century Sint-Romboutstoren has a funny story. In the 1600s, a drunk local thought the tower was on fire. He alarmed the whole city and the people pulled up lots and lots of buckets of water, up all 538 steps, to extinguish the flames... Until it suddenly disappeared. It was a misty day, and when the moon slipped through the haze, the people realized there never really was a fire.. They were actually trying to extinguish the moon. That is why the people of Mechelen are still called the Moon Extinguishers today!
