Ditch Plains Beach

Ditch Plains Beach showing surfing, general coastal views and a sandy beach
Beginner surfers or long-boarders, you’re in for a treat. This Montauk beach has an extra-long break that is perfect for cruising and taking in the views.

Check the swell at Ditch Plains Beach, one of Montauk’s premier surf destinations. Renowned for its family-friendly atmosphere and long surf breaks, Ditch Plains Beach is the perfect spot for novices and veterans. Explore the beach and enjoy its gorgeous scenery. You’ll see rugged cliffs and rolling dunes along its borders, as well as a beautifully uninterrupted Atlantic horizon.

Stroll beside the tree-covered dunes and make your way onto the beach. Craggy dunes and sea cliffs border the broad expanse of golden sand. Wander along the stretch of sand and enjoy the fresh sea breeze. At the western end, find Shadmoor State Park and its beautiful bluffs. To the east, rocky platforms make a great spot to go exploring with the children. Look for sea critters living amid the rock pools.

If the sun is shining, cool off with a swim in the ocean. Splash and play in the waves or teach the kids how to paddle in the swell. Lifeguards patrol this beach in the summer months, so you can enjoy the water safely. A rolling swell at Ditch Plains Beach creates the perfect conditions for long-boarders and novices. Grab your board and try surfing on the beach’s notoriously long breaks. You’ll be cruising along the waves in no time.

All that splashing in the surf might give you an appetite, so head to one of the beachside concession stands. Grab a snack and relax on the beach. Nearby Shadmoor State Park is a great spot to bring your picnic. Spread out on the pretty bluffs and enjoy the ocean views.

Ditch Plains Beach is less than a 10-minute drive east from downtown Montauk. The two parking areas available next to the beach require a permit. Visit the beach in the summer months to enjoy the lively atmosphere or arrive in winter to have the broad sandy expanse nearly to yourself.

Good small waves for surfing.. However; this is a locals beach. there is no public parking. I parked at the State park and walked 25 minutes through the path to the beach. It was a beautiful scenic hike so I didn't mind. But it was far.
