The hotel was closed and i was left stranded then out of pocket. You sent emails on tuesday saying you were room only as the bar and restaurant was shut and then on wed. I arrived on friday for the two room for 2 nights and found the hotel completely shut and stripped out. You had windows fitted so whilst you sent an email tuesday your hotel must have been shut for a while. My friend and i had drove 4 jours and were stranded. Ther was no reception left and no one answering. We ended up having to pay for another hotel which cost us much more on top of what we had already paid for Risley Hall.

Being refurbished, no restaurant. No breakfast
Being refurbished, so no restaurant. We only found out when we checked in. We were directed to an external restaurant a few minutes away, but that place only opened early during the week.
Room (no.7) was large and contained furniture from all eras; including a bedside lamp that was impossible to plug in! Bed was firm, but comfortable. En suite was showing the lack of decent maintenance.
Most of hotel was shut for refurbishment -no bar -no breakfast -no restaurant -no other facilities other than room only -which was NOT what we paid for . Bathroom recently refurbished was excellent -but bedroom lacked central heating and no plug sockets for bedside light- main light fittings in bedroom damaged and mismatched bulbs. Wallpaper hanging off wall in bedroom. Only one member of staff in reception sometimes and she stated Expedia should have told us -Expedia did not know apparently. No member of staff on duty when we checked out either. Requested Expedia chase up and ask for refund /or partial refund .
A hotel is meant to provide food. This one does not, no bar. The place was deserted. Got an email saying the kitchen had closed, permanently. There is some building works going on. Place desperately needs refurbishing and should be closed for that. Worst hotel I have ever stayed in on this website.
Tatty notes with a number to ring on arrival. Place was deserted.
Not a hotel - read the recent reviews! At best, a room to stay with no services, and under construction. We stayed several nights at the Risley while visiting family as it was a convenient location, and this is about all that was positive about the experience. A day before the reservation started, we got an email saying the hotel was under construction and there were no services - too late to cancel or rebook elsewhere. We arrived after 10 to an empty building with a sign to a phone number to call, which was not answered. After walking through creepy hallways of side buildings, we finally found someone and got checked in. The next morning, we were woken by construction workers directly across the hall - we were literally the ONLY guests on this property, and construction was literally ONLY going on outside our door. About two hours later, the staff knocked on our door to give payment, with no regards for "sorry about the noise." The next morning, we were woken by a screeching fire alarm. Again, no apologies or recognition from staff. After that, our expectations were quite low, and we were just happy to sleep. The property might be nice after renovations, but - in the interim - do not stay here if you are expecting a hotel.

No complaints.
I thought it was ok, warm and clean in the room we were given. Currently no food option, but plenty of options locally.
Lovely stay in this beautiful country house hotel. Even though there is currently some refurbishment work taking place, we had a great time. Friendly staff and a comfortable, clean and spacious room.
The pictures on the site look stunning, then you arrive. The hotel is going through a major refurbishment. Nothing about this mentioned on the site!
Got to our room on the top floor, nice big room, thats really it. Windows were left open and the room was very cold, the heating didn't work, and the elctric heater left in the room didn't work either.
One of the main lights in the room worked, the other didn't have a bulb in it I found out. One bedside lamp worked, the other didn't.
The bedding was a summer weight duvet, winter one needed, no extra blankets found in the room. The pillows didn't have any filling in them with how thin they were.
Paid for bed and breakfast. Got 2 emails from the hotel(see attached) explaining that the kitchen was under refurbishment and that only a continental breakfast would be available, happy with that. Wife went down in the morning to have the breakfast to be told there was no breakfast!
Lovely old building, nice grounds for walking the dogs in. Just needs a lot doing to it before I would ever consider going near it again.
It might be nice when it is finished, but i wouldn't bank on it. Outdated, falling apart, bar/restaurant closed. Workmen all over the building. Breakfast was awful - at last minute told kitchen was closed so no hot food - despite menus on the table for cooked breakfasts. Continental breakfast was not fresh, cheese was sweaty and meat was curling up at the ends, yoghurt was warm, the only safe bet was a packet of coco pops - but then there was no bowls! Shame as building looks lovely on the outside and grounds have lots of potential, but especially for now, I would say steer clear to avoid disappointment.
This was the worst hotel in which we had stayed while visiting Britain for many years. The outside appearance of the hotel is beautiful. The car park, owing to excessive rain, was a muddy bog as it was not paved. The interior has some elegant old furnishings but looks dated and highly neglected. Our room was in the attic and had only skylights with no regular windows. The beds were fairly comfortable. It was a cold day when we arrived - the skylights had been left open and the heating was not working. The staff eventually supplied a stand-up heater. There was no hot water in the bathroom, and showering was painful. The room did. It look clean - there was a proliferation of dust. We ate dinner in the restaurant the first night - the restaurant was cold, we were the only customers, and the food was mediocre. Full English breakfast in the morning was much better.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I did not make a formal complaint to the management as the attitude seemed to be that such conditions were par for the course for an older property. I was frankly surprised that the property had a license to be in business.

Used to be great . But now it’s horrendous and disgusting … dirty , tired , stains everywhere … horrible . If it wasn’t late I would have just turned round and walked out . Shame it used to be so good 20 years ago !!!
Hairs in the bathroom on the floor, insects too!
This hotel does not look anything like the photos and is in desperate need of repair. Not clean at all which surely is rule number 1 to get right, Reception staff were great which was the only saving grace.
Great character left in the buildings , wonderful to see original features, need a bit of fresh paint here and there, staff very commendable, very peaceful. 2nd time we have stayed and did not disappoint, will stay again
Adequate for an overnight stop. Noise pollution from heating system was the only downside. Kitchen was closed, but was informed in advance, so it was fine

The property could have potential but looks very tired and service could be better
Expecting the worse after reading some other reviews but pleasantly surprised. Beautuful old building, our room had original beams. Ground great fior walking our dog, and the area immediately in front of hotel well maintained.
Staff were lovely, very helpful. Booked in again on ti break our return trip from Yorkshire. Looking forward to it.
The restaurant was clised fir evening meal, advise pre booking a meal at the Risley Park pub, virtually next door. Also great.
