This Gothic church houses a lavish silver chapel and one of the most elaborate tombs in Europe.

The Court Church (Hofkirche) houses the elaborate tomb of Emperor Maximilian I. Gaze into the faces of the larger-than-life bronze statues that surround the tomb. The craftsmanship is so detailed that you half expect them to blink. These statues, along with the stunning reliefs depicting scenes from the emperor’s life, make this one of the most important tombs in Europe.

The Hofkirche was constructed in 1553 by Ferdinand I in tribute to his grandfather, Maximilian I. Work on Maximilian’s tomb begun in 1500, but it wasn’t completed until more than 80 years later, long after his death in 1519. The fact that his body is actually interred elsewhere does little to diminish the powerful effect the tomb’s designers created.

Enter the church through the adjacent Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum (Museum of Tyrolean Folk Art) and watch a short presentation on the life of Maximilian.

Inside the church, shafts of light penetrate from the windows down to the black and white tiles of the floor. The design of the room draws your attention to the central nave in which the tomb is housed. The 28 bronze statues range from 6-8 feet (2-2.5 meters) in height. See Maximilian, his ancestors and key figures from history, including King Arthur. On top of the tomb, another statue depicts the emperor kneeling, surrounded by the virtues of justice, fortitude, temperance and prudence. Look around at the 24 reliefs that depict scenes from his life.

While the tomb is undoubtedly the main attraction at this site, you shouldn’t miss the silver chapel. To reach it, climb the stairs opposite the main entrance. A wooden Madonna embossed with silver sits atop a finely decorated altar.

The Hofkirche is located next to the Imperial Palace in central Innsbruck. It is within walking distance of many major hotels and attractions, and is easily reached by bus. Allow approximately 90 minutes to watch the presentation and wander through the church.

The church is open daily, with shorter hours on Sundays and other holidays. There is a small charge for entry.
