Spend some time exploring the Chiesa di Santa Corona and you’ll find a magnificent Gothic interior richly decorated with paintings, frescoes and sculptural works. It is said to house a piece of the crown of thorns placed on Jesus’ head in the events before his crucifixion. Delve into the crypt to see some of the church’s architectural highlights and exquisite carvings.

As you approach the church’s red-brick façade, note its symmetrical Romanesque design. The main portal is an immense arch topped by a trio of sculptures. Look up to see the ornate rose window above the portal. The pointed spire of the bell tower rises up from the rear of the church.

Enter the church to discover its vast nave, which is illuminated by the glow of warm daylight spilling in through the windows. Make your way to the chancel, which was designed by Lorenzo de Bologna in the 1400s and contains some significant paintings sculptures.

Check out Rocco de Vicenza’s Garzadori altar, which houses Giavanni Bellini’s Baptism of Christ and Paolo Veronese’s Adoration of the Magi. This second work is believed to be a favorite of Goethe’s. The chancel also contains works by Lorenzo Veneziano, Marcello Fogolino, Bartolomeo Montagna and Giambattista Pittoni. Admire the finely carved wooden choir in the apse. In the Thiene Chapel, you’ll find early 15th-century frescoes by Michelino da Besozzo.

Explore the crypt to find a superb architectural treasure by Andrea Palladio. The Valmarana Chapel was added in 1576 and features elegant masonry in its altar, niches and details. It is believed that the esteemed architect himself is buried here.
