Overlooking the trees, homes and river of the quaint town, Château de Chaumont befits a fairytale. Dating back to the 10th century, it has a fascinating history revolving around a noble family and later Louis XI. Browse numerous works by acclaimed artists. Attend one of the regular events held at the castle, such as the nighttime summer activities. These include the “Gardens of Light,” which is a spectacular light show.
Stroll through the park to see the lovely landscape gardens. As part of the International Garden Festival, the park proudly displays artistic exhibits, hanging gardens and many other impressive sections.
Have lunch at one of the many establishments around the grounds. Le Grand Velum uses products from eco-agricultural sources for its restaurant selections. Other sites serving food include the Park Café and the Tea Salon. Purchase books on French history from the Château Boutique and collect seeds and plants from the Gardens Boutique.
The castle opens to the public daily year-round from morning until late afternoon with extended hours in summer. Pay the standard fee for adults, while kids have a discount and toddlers enter for free.
Château de Chaumont is on the southern bank of the River Loire in the center of Chaumont-sur-Loire. Visit several hotels and shops standing beneath the castle.
