A little history:
The old faubourg of Chartrons is the historic stronghold of wine merchants. Its history is also marked by colonial trade. The most distant origins of the district, to which it owes its name, date back to the 14ᵉ century when a community of Carthusian monks settled here. The great Flemish, Irish and English merchant families arrived here in the 17ᵉ century. By the 18ᵉ, the port of Lune was the most important in France. In the 19ᵉ century, Bordeaux's wine-growing vocation was at its peak, and the district was home to the area's leading merchants.
