Germany’s southeastern state is true to its iconic postcard idylls of alpine meadows, verdant woodlands and traditional pubs serving froth-topped steins.

Experience the long-standing traditions of Bavaria, Germany’s most lively mountain state, where the monumental Alps drop away into fertile plains fed by the beautiful Danube. The region is renowned for its beer-swilling locals dressed in the traditional garb of lederhosen, but there is plenty more to see in Bavaria beyond its cozy pubs.

The state’s capital is Munich (München), a scenic city with magnificent architecture, fantastic museums and the Oktoberfest beer celebrations. This world-famous festival entices visitors from around the world to enjoy local beers, Bavarian food and traditional music. You can also see customary dancing around the maypole on the Maibaumaufstellen on May 1.

Discover the magical streetscape of Bamberg, an entire town that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. See medieval architecture in Augsburg or join one of the many festivals held in Wagner’s hometown, Bayreuth. Nuremberg is famous for its traditional and handcrafted toys and Christmas markets, and is a significant site for Germany’s World War II history. Check out Regensburg for pretty Danube River views. Experience the university atmosphere and fine wines in the beautiful town of Wuerzburg.

See some of Bavaria’s famed wilderness by exploring the numerous forests and lakes in the Bavarian Alps. In winter, try out the region’s ski resorts and snowfields. The deepest lake in the Alps is within the Berchtesgaden National Park, while its largest is Chiemsee. This breathtaking lake is home to a castle that was based on the architecture of Versailles. Marvel at the picturesque spires of St. Bartholomew’s Church on the banks of the Koenigssee.

Go on a scenic drive along the Romantic Road, a pretty route that winds through villages and past castles. Don’t miss seeing the fairytale-like spires of Neuschwanstein Castle, on which Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom® Theme Park is based.

Fly into Bavaria’s busiest international airport in Munich the rest of the region is easily accessible by train and bus. Rent a car to explore the mountainous landscapes and scenic countryside at your own pace.
