The VS is in as good a location as you can get for visiting Ashland. It's a half block from the main drag, easy walking distance to all major places, including the theaters. There's a bit more noise than some places because of the urban location, but the convenience is worth the tradeoff.
We (two senior couples) stayed in the main house and did not use the out building. The house is nicely appointed and stocked. Pretty, with all the gadgets you need. Nice bright kitchen. There's a also a large dining area and small front sitting room. The A/C works well.
There's a delightful sitting area behind the house in a small grove of bamboo.
Excellent communication from the owners; easy booking.
The factors that kept us from assigning five stars were two: First, despite the description, there is only one shower, which can slow morning preparation--especially when there are four older folks for whom a the other option, a claw-footed tub, is not an easy option. Second, the beds are tall enough to be a bit hard to get into. There's a soft foam pad on the top of the beds. Not ideal for those who like a bit of firmness or who aren't gymnasts. (One of the rooms had a step stool, which was a help.)
