Afton Station Cottage -Beautifully Renovated Blue Ridge Scenic Historic Setting
Our house is nestled on the eastern slope of Afton Mountain just below Rockfish Gap in the northern tip of Historic Nelson County on the “Sunrise Side of the Blue Ridge” It’s just 3-minutes away from where the Blue Ridge Parkway meets the Skyline Drive and 4-minutes to the southern gatehouse of the Shenandoah National Park. Hiking, skiing, golf, biking, and sightseeing; the area calls to the outdoor enthusiast. If history is your thing you're fortunate that we have that too! But if you are the type that prefers a quiet spot with a good book that's possible too; the house has two porches and outside of the occasional train rumbling past it's pretty quiet. There are music and performance venues in the nearby communities of Crozet, Waynesboro, Charlottesville, and Staunton. In recent years Nelson County has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in the age-old crafts of brewing, distilling, and viticulture; Nelson County's popular Brew Ridge Trail begins just three miles down the road where you can tour numerous breweries, cideries, vineyards, and a distillery or two. One section of our property was once the site of the freight station for the original Blue Ridge Railway which sits alongside the recently renovated Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Trail. This Rails-To-Trails addition will include Crozet’s 4300-foot-long tunnel dug 500 feet below Afton Mountain during the 1850s. It was one of the longest tunnels ever built in its day and the first tunnel ever dug simultaneously from both sides. The tunnel/trail opened to visitors in the fall of 2020 to rave reviews. The house (our first home) is a simple wood-framed 2-story cottage with about 1200 sq feet of living space. We don’t know how old it is but 25 years ago we met a woman who told us she was born in the house in 1911; we don't think it's much older than that. Much of the house has been modernized and renovated. The upstairs bedrooms are small by modern standards and have sloped ceilings and the stairway was built for a time when people were shorter so you folks over 6’2 should watch your noggins. There are two bedrooms upstairs; one with a queen and the second bedroom has two twin beds. There is a modern bathroom with a shower and a small office nook. On the first floor, you will find a well-equipped kitchen, dining, and living area in an open and well-lit floor plan. The original living room was converted to a first-floor bedroom with a king bed in 2022. Just two steps from the new primary bedroom and off the family room you will find a small full bath with a tub/shower. The cozy open front porch faces east onto a small shaded front lawn. There are views to the east and south that open up in the winter. It is the best place to escape the heat of the day or to enjoy early morning coffee. The fully enclosed back porch was fully insulated in 2022 to make it more comfortable. It is not heated or air-conditioned as of yet since we want to see how it responds to the insulation. The trailhead for the Blue Ridge Tunnel, a major local attraction, adjoins our property at one corner. The eastern access trail is a nearly level hard-pack surface 1/2 mile to the tunnel entrance. The tunnel, which opened for train traffic in 1858, is 4300 feet long and was dug simultaneously from east and west.
We’re located just 25 miles west of Charlottesville, UVA, and Monticello, 4 minutes from I-64 exit 99 or 10 minutes from I-64 exit 107. Waynesboro is 10 minutes to the west. It’s just a 15-minute walk to the Appalachian Trail. Wintergreen's Valley section, Stoney Creek is a 15-minute drive down the Rockfish Valley. The skiing area on the mountain is another 15 minutes beyond that or, if weather permits during non-freezing temperatures, you can shave some time by traveling the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway route to the mountain section. Enjoy everything the Blue Ridge Mountains have to offer. The more information you provide in the booking inquiry the better we will be able to serve you. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful, comfy accommodations. Great location and beautiful views. Nelson County is a favorite spot for us and we visit often. So glad we found Afton Cottage- will visit again!!
The house was beautifully renovated. The homeowners did a great job leaving some of the historical charm. Location was great. Close to many of the wineries and breweries. The views were amazing very peaceful. Wonderful weekend at our friend’s wedding.
Beautiful little cabin located in the mountains. Clean. Great location to access several cities and activities. Wonderful hosts with great communication
The cottage was perfect. Centrally located, very clean and the experience was seamless. The cottage was decorated nicely with a scenic view and the front porch was so nice to sit and watch the sun rise. Owner hospitality was very thoughtful complete with labels throughout the house, and stocked with everything we needed. We had a wonderful time and the short walking distance to the historic tunnel was something we will never forget. Just a wonderful trip thanks to our stay at Afton. We all want to come back next year.
Property was super clean and ideally located with easy access to national parks, wineries, breweries and Charlottesville.
Owner communicated proactively and was fully available throughout our stay. Loved the front porch and the peaceful country vibes!
Stayed in the cottage for a family wedding in the area. Beautiful scenery and close to numerous wineries and activities, but the cottage itself is out in the country. Easy drive to Charlottesville as well. Would stay there again.
The cottage is beautifully decorated. Very clean and had everything we needed for a weekend stay. Convenient location for wineries and breweries. Would absolutely stay at the cottage again.
Very cute, clean, and a good location. Everything was in working order and the owners had an up to date resource book that was very handy. Since I love trains, the one that rolled by in the early hours of the morning was a welcome sound.
Great property and responsive communication from the property owners. The cottage was spotless and was a great location for hiking, wineries, breweries, and other local attractions. We would definitely come back for another stay!
The home was so nice and very clean. Private location but convenient to town and a multitude of outdoor activities. The hosts were very nice and really thought of everything to make my stay great. I will definitely stay again.
Family of five with kids on spring break trip. We all had plenty of space to spread out and we loved being able to walk down to the tunnel trail every day. Super close to Monticello, Skyline Drive, Charlottesville, Staunton and local sites. Cottage was clean and super well stocked, we appreciated not needing to go to a local grocery store for incidentals. Highly recommend and great communication with property owners.
Yards away from historic train tunnel offering daily 3 mile walks. Beautiful mountain views and a nicely kept property. So relaxing and not so far from Charlottesville
This cottage is very well appointed and in a fabulous location for the greater Charlottesville area. You’ll be staying within walking distance of the trailhead to the Blue Ridge Tunnel trailhead and a convenient hop to local roads to everything. My family and I had a wonderful time and would absolutely consider coming back!
Ideal location for family vist to Blue Ridge and Charlottesville
2 grandparents and 2 grandsons found the Afton Cottage to be comfortable and convenient. We enjoyed breakfast with bluebirds and bunnies, bikes and hikes on the tunnel trail, drives and hikes in the SNP, and a family reunion in nearby Charlottesville. The house was very comfortable and well appointed.
First, the house was well equipped and very nicely appointed. It is a very comfortable house to kick back in. Communication from the owners was exceptionally clear and they went out of their way to answer question I had.Second, location is great. Its on the road to Blue Ridge tunnel and it's a quick hike to the entrance. It's also a stone's throw from 151 and all its vineyards and breweries. Highly recommend....
Beautifully renovated cottage in great location-- right near the southern entrance of Skyline drive, near Charlottesville and close to many great wineries. Would highly recommend.
We loved our stay at Afton Station Cottage. It is very comfortable & charming. There's a well-stocked kitchen, a large table for board games, & comfortable beds. The location was great, very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway & Shenandoah National Park. The Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail is right next door. We would definitely want to stay here again the next time we are in the area.
Tom and Jackie’s home was perfect for our short family vacation. Kitchen was nicely equipped, and we even enjoyed the fire pit one evening. We hiked in SNP, checked out UVA, Monticello, and the Charlottesville farmers market, and made the hike through the RR tunnel. Loved that we were so remote, but still close to churches, restaurants and other activities.
Everything about our stay at Afton Cottage was exceptional. Tom and Jackie are excellent hosts! All our questions were answered quickly and they gave great suggestions on wineries to try. The cottage itself was super cute and comfortable. The location was very convenient to the Afton wineries and breweries. We were so happy we booked Afton Cottage. We will be back!
