A beautiful water feature and a “Green Theatre” created from high hedges adorn the gardens of this 16th-century villa where Napoleon’s sister once lived.
The Villa Reale is a spectacular mansion and set of grounds in the quaint village of Marlia. It has a fascinating history, having served as the residence of Napoleon’s sister who was a duchess of Lucca. Visit Villa Reale to enjoy the period surroundings that make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.
On a fine summer’s day, wander through the 39 acres (16 hectares) of stunning grounds. Inspect the exotic and rare plants in the botanical gardens and relax beside elaborate floral displays. Half of the park shows off a 17th-century aesthetic, with tall rows of trees and trimmed hedges, while the other is designed in the style of an English garden. Walk along the latter’s winding trails and enjoy the picturesque vistas.
In the 17th century-style garden, watch the rush of the jets in the Water Theater, which is made up of fountains and a pebble mosaic.
Admire the Italian Renaissance design of the palace, which dates back to the early 16th century. Undulating mountains form a dramatic backdrop.
Attend one of the many events that take place regularly in these majestic grounds. These events generally include art festivals, flower shows and children’s treasure hunts.
March through October, the site opens daily from morning until late afternoon. Embark on a guided tour, available Saturday afternoons. Note that you can only visit the site in winter by calling and reserving a tour in advance. There is a fee to enter with reduced prices for teenagers and seniors. Kids enter for free and season tickets are on offer.
The Villa Reale is located in the village of Marlia, in the Province of Lucca. From Capannori, travel north for 5 miles (8 kilometers) by car to get here in about 15 minutes. You can also visit by bus, which takes half an hour.
