The staff are very nice. No free breakfast and our room had a terrible view of a narrow alleyway, but the location is great as it is only steps away from the walking shopping streets that lead to the waterfront. Comfortable western-style accomodation.

Location is fantastic, just across the road from People’s Park metro station, next to the famous Nanjing Road West shopping area, walking distance to The Bund, and also close to residential areas so visitors can enjoy less expensive local dining as well as more expensive tourist-targetted dining. Hotel staff are courteous, efficient, helpful, and cheerful. Breakfast was excellent, with western and Chinese options, including good coffee. The hotel and the rooms are furnished in beautiful mid-20th century style, very comfortable, and everything works (fridge, room safe, lights, air conditioning). Toilet even had a bidet. I stayed in over 10 different hotels in China over the past year and I liked this one the best.

Best bang for your mid-class buck

It's a swanky place with a reasonable price and an amazing location. The people at the front desk can speak English, but not many other staff can. The facilities look well worn a bit, but are a timeless design. This is one of those hotel styles you often see in family movies. Just make sure you're on West Nanjing Road, not Beijing Road, the pin is incorrect.

This hotel, despite being in a historical building represents outstanding value for money. The rooms are generous size with high ceilings. The furniture is solid, despite showing its age. The bathrooms (I stayed at this hotel more than once) have been renovated and are up to standard in functionality and cleanliness, so is the bed linen. Rooms are restocked with bottled water daily, the buffet breakfast is like AUD$12 per day and represents outstanding value IMO. The hotel is literally across the road from exit 8 of People's Square, line 2, the very heart of Shanghai tourist district (Nanjing Rd) the line 2 connects directly to both airports Hongqiao and Pudong, so really it's hard to ask for more. Hilton it ain't but neither is the price charged. Would I stay there again? Most definitely (already have).

I highly recommend this hotel because it is very close to People Square station. You can just walk out from exit 7, and you will find the hotel right there. It's also near Nanjing Road, making it easy to stroll to The Bund. Inside, the hotel is beautifully decorated with a vintage style, and the rooms are very spacious. The price is quite reasonable. The only downside is that there is a smell of smoke, but other than that, everything is great. I recommend everyone to stay here!
