We chose to stay in Oita one night before heading to Beppu to experience the onsen. This hotel is easy to find, as it's a straight shot on the main road from the station. The hotel was clean, quiet, had great amenities, and offered extra toiletries for women. The room was spacious compared to other similarly priced hotels in Japan, and the breakfast, which was in the restaurant attached to the hotel, was outstanding with many different options and regional specialties. Checking in and out very easy and fast all the staff super nice and friendly and very accommodating considering I don't speak Japanese. Great little place about a 10 minute walk from Oita station. Check out Cafe Giraffe just around the corner. Great cappuccino and honey almond toast bread with ice cream.
I enjoyed Beppu's Onsens (Myoban) but actually liked Oita the city a lot more. It's only about a 20 minute train ride to Beppu.
