The beautiful Palazzo di San Giorgio is one of Genoa’s most impressive landmarks. Stand outside and appreciate its ornate, colorful façade, which depicts St. George and the Dragon in a swirling frenzy. These days, the building is the home of the offices of the Port Authority of Genoa. It also has an exhibition space that hosts a changing array of exhibits throughout the year.
The Palazzo di San Giorgio dates from 1260, when it was the first public building in Genoa, but was later expanded in 1570. It was then that Lorenzo Tavarone created the masterful fresco for which the building is known. The palace was once the political headquarters of the Republic of Genoa, playing a crucial role in the republic’s administration. Since 1904, the building’s proximity to the Old Port has made it the ideal venue for the Port Authority of Genoa. Visit the palace today, however, and you will be treated to more than just offices.
On the ground floor is a large exhibition space that is open to the public. Enter the building to find the visitor’s office and get an overview of the ever-changing exhibitions. These include everything from historic figures of Genoa to art. The façade is a piece of art in itself, too. Its statues, the great fresco and a beautiful clock all shimmer in blues, oranges and yellows.
The Palazzo di San Giorgio is located in the center of the medieval port. There is a metro stop right outside. There is no need to book tickets to the exhibitions in advance, as these can be purchased at the door. Even if you don’t have time to enter the building, be sure to include it on your itinerary just to see the beautiful façade. Visit during daytime hours to appreciate the incredible level of detail.
