Grand Hotel Excelsior

10/10 Excellent

"The room was spacious with a lovely view as promised (and paid for). The outdoor pool was a highlight with enough room to get a workout (not exactly laps but it was big enough. The room was cleaned well. One note for improvement would be the breakfast which as just OK, with nothing really top notch and the coffee, delivered in pots to our tables was very poor. It tasted like a weird blend of instant coffee and mud. We didn't try ordering special coffee such as cappuccino so can comment on those. Many guests, being Brits, had tea for breakfast I noticed which would have solved the coffee issue. The waiting staff at the "Admiral's" restaurant was in training and will eventually be good if they keep at it. Nothing they did was terrible but a bit off on timing some times. But these issues didn't spoil the quality of the dinners. All in all if we return to Malta it would be on the list of options but I hear they are closing soon for a 2 year renovation so it wont' be for a while."

"The reception area and hotel are charming. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The location is ideal. There are many bars and restaurants nearby, and it is a short walk uphill to the Upper Baraka Garden, with many more restaurants along the way. My only complaint is that the room looked unfinished, with no transition between the floor and the walls. There was just a strip of raw concrete."

"Amazing location, very close to the main areas of Valletta. Plenty of restaurants in the area. The staff was very helpful, provided us with excellent recommendations for restaurants. The only downside of the hotel was the breakfast. It was a little disappointing, the space (lobby area) can become very crowded and replenishment of food items can be quite slow."

"Our room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We were in room 301 which had very tiny windows, as is the nature of a building of this ages, in some rooms. It was fine as we were out and about anyway but I mention it should anyone wish to know. All the staff were friendly, professional and very helpful. The reception team are very happy to help with anything they can. They recommend a tour to us, which we took and love it. In fact we enjoyed it so much we did another one during our stay. We were very grateful for the recommendation, it was with Jovana, there is information in reception. The breakfast was a great start to the day. There was options for continental, cooked, fruits, yogurt and pastries. Again the breakfast staff were very pleasant. The hotel is very well placed for the sights and restaurants."

"The room was very clean and a good size. It did appear that finishing touches were needed regarding the ceiling and fixing of patio doors. Also the road entrance is not finished and it's quite a steep step up yo the main doors. The staff were happy to help with any questions we had and were very polite and friendly. Breakfast was plentiful but the room was quite small and the seating was very close together which made it tricky to get in and out of the chairs. We didn't sit out on the balcony as our view wasn't particularly pleasant as we were overlooking many sides and back of high buildings. I do feel the hotel although quite basic is value for money"

"Quietly located off St Christopher Street. Several steps to get to the hotel and a bit inconvenient if you have heavy luggage. Deluxe room was quite spacious and the shower/bathroom were a decent size. Limited options for breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful, especially Michael, Liezel, Barbara and Veronica. Small pool on the roof to relax."
