Carvings in the rock at the Kanheri caves, Mumbai, India. These are a group of over 100 caves in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in the suburb of Mumbai and the park claims it is one of the most visited parks in any big city. The caves that date back from the 1 BC through 10 century CE, were cut in the hillside and were used by Buddhists as wharas or homes for living, meditating and learning. The larger caves however were halls for community worship and have intricately carved Buddhist sculptures, pillars and stupas. You can also see the drainage system on how rain water was collected and used in the caves. Great place to visit while in Mumbai especially in the monsoons when there are little water runoffs down the hillside and the forest around is vibrant with wildlife especially monkeys. #caves
