The region
Porlock Weir is a picturesque harbour village on the Exmoor National Park coastline in Somerset, with a history stretching back to the 15th century. The small tidal harbour, with its ancient lock gates and pebble beach, sits at the heart of a thriving community.
You'll find a welcoming pub, restaurants ranging from relaxed dining to Michelin-listed Italian cuisine, cosy cafes, and a popular street food takeaway -- all within walking distance of the harbour. Independent shops and galleries line the lanes, including Exmoor Glass, the Harbour Gallery, and Porlock Bay Oysters, which opened expanded premises in 2024.
The larger village of Porlock is approximately one mile away and has a broader range of amenities including grocery shops, a traditional butcher, chemist, cash machine, hardware shop, visitor centre, and a selection of independent restaurants and tea rooms. Most shops in Porlock and Porlock Weir keep hours of 9am to 5pm, often extending during the summer season.
Porlock Weir was recently used as a filming location for The Salt Path, the adaptation of Raynor Winn's bestselling memoir about walking the South West Coast Path.

The property was beautiful, and quirky, and the garden was a delight. The harbour was a very short distance, and not commercialised. There was plenty to do for all ages. Highly recommended

Had a lovely time at this property. Although the house is quite big we mostly spent our time here in the lovely conservatory. The weather was a big help having the doors and Windows open to wander into the amazing garden. Did some lovely walks and visited some great pubs! A very good chance we may return.

Fantastic stay in Porlock at Chapel Knapp ....the house is perfectly located and it is easy to walk into the Weir or to Porlock Village. The views from the conservatory are lovely all over the Marsh and towards Bossington. The Gardens at the property are amazing with many unusual plants. The house is large and spacious and well equipped, its a little old fashioned in places, but that adds to the character and charm....would recommend!

We chose Chapel Knap to celebrate a big birthday and it proved the perfect place for the occasion. The house and gardens are fascinating and full of character, it was hard to tear ourselves away from the terrace with its beautiful sea view. We enjoyed every moment, relaxing in the conservatory, eating on the terrace and walking into delightful Porlock Weir with its harbour and superb Italian restaurant. A wonderful experience.

Great location, perfect for two families to get together. Amazing views. One bedroom has the best sea view I have seen from any house and I live next to the sea! Don't expect perfect finishes and immaculate cleanliness eg you'll find the odd dead fly in the huge garden room which will become the hub of your stay in summer. Furniture and decor is old/antique and full of quirky charm, but still has mod cons eg WiFi and satellite TV. Gardens are stunning. This will be a place we will come back to time and time again.

We had a lovely stay at Chapel Knap with our two dogs. The house had everything we needed and the conservatory was great with views down to the bay. The garden was really lovely and safe for the dogs as it was enclosed. We walked down to the port and beach several times with the dogs who loved the beach and the sea. We also swam in the bay amid lots of (non-stinging) jellyfish. With no streetlights, we were able to see so many stars and a couple of planets. We would recommend visiting Tarr Steps and also Combe Martin for swimming, paddle boarding and looking through the rock pools.

Beautifully situated old house set in the most stunning mature gardens. Someone planted these with love and experience. The ample conservatory and top terrace of the garden give beautiful views over the Bristol Channel, across the flats to Bossington Hill and across the trees in the garden below which is full of birds and butterflies. Just a couple of minutes walk down to Porlock Weir, we were lulled to sleep by the waves below. The house and its furniture, including the beds, are old style. We were just three and for our needs the little kitchen in the conservatory was well equipped, including good size fridge and separate freezer, microwave and the sort of accessories you miss if you find yourself without, including kitchen scales, good knives, salt and pepper mills. We were welcomed with lovely flowers from the garden on the table.
