About this property
Chapel Knap, Porlock Weir
Property Summary Chapel Knap is a large period property in a tranquil setting with breathtaking views. The entrance hall at Chapel Knap is the last remaining part of the original chapel, which was built in the 12th century.
Main Description Chapel Knap can accommodate up to 10 guests plus cot (available on request). There are four bedrooms on the first floor; one double (with king-sized bed), the Double Double room (two 4ft 6in double beds, sleeping up to four), one small single bedroom, and a family room comprising king-sized double bed plus a single. There are two upstairs bathrooms; one with bath only and the other has a bath and shower. Downstairs there is a living room, and the kitchen/dining room is situated in the garden room with some comfortable chairs so that you can relax and enjoy the stunning views of Porlock Bay.
Please note: the kitchen is on the small side for a group of 10. We holiday at Chapel Knap as a family of ten ourselves and it works well with a little teamwork, but please do look carefully at the photographs of the kitchen and dining area before booking and make sure you are happy with the space.

A small part of the downstairs of the house is a self-contained one-bedroom apartment belonging to the owner, Caroline. She rarely uses it, so you will normally have Chapel Knap to yourselves - if you do hear any noise, it is more likely to be from next door. Her phone number is in the welcome pack should you have any questions during your stay.
Dogs are welcome by prior arrangement (maximum of 3). A supplementary fee of £10 will be added to your invoice per dog. Please do not allow your dogs on the furniture or beds and do not leave them alone in the property at any time.
Chapel Knap is strictly non-smoking.
The property will be ready from 4 pm on the day of your arrival. Please depart by 10 am on the last day of your stay. Please leave the property clean and tidy so that we can guarantee it will be ready on time for our next guests.
Indoor Description The kitchen is fitted with a free-standing fridge (larder-style), an under-counter freezer, electric oven with hob, microwave and a slimline dishwasher. Other equipment includes toaster, kettle, a variety of kitchen utensils, cookware, cutlery, crockery and glasses.

A cot and/or high chair is available; please request these items when booking so we can make sure they are present for your arrival.
Electricity and heating costs are included in the price of your accommodation. Chapel Knap is fitted with oil-fired central heating.
Bed linen, duvets, blankets and towels are provided for your convenience, but please bring your own beach towels if you wish to take towels with you on day trips. Bed linen is not supplied for the cot.
A small amount of tea, coffee, sugar, milk and biscuits are provided to ensure you can have a hot drink as soon as you arrive. There may also be other non-perishable items like a salt, pepper and a few herbs or spices available. Cleaning materials such as washing up liquid, dishwasher powder and surface cleaner will be present in the property. One or two toilet rolls will be provided.
Outdoor Description The house sits within a large sub-tropical garden which is private and gated onto the road. There is a lawned terrace with doors leading onto it from the spacious garden room as well as the living room, from the terrace you can enjoy spectacular views of Porlock Bay towards Hurlstone Point whilst listening to the sea.
Parking Secure off-road parking for 3 cars is available within the property's grounds; this is a short walk from the front door, approximately 30 metres along a gravelled path. You can squeeze 4 cars in the drive if you park tight. The parking area is inside the double wooden gates off the road. You can park outside the lane opposite the house; there is space for more cars. The lane is relatively quiet, so not much fast-moving traffic, but parking and pulling away is tight; we're lucky at Chapel Knap to have quite a bit of space.

The region
Porlock Weir is a picturesque harbour village on the Exmoor National Park coastline in Somerset, with a history stretching back to the 15th century. The small tidal harbour, with its ancient lock gates and pebble beach, sits at the heart of a thriving community.
You'll find a welcoming pub, restaurants ranging from relaxed dining to Michelin-listed Italian cuisine, cosy cafes, and a popular street food takeaway -- all within walking distance of the harbour. Independent shops and galleries line the lanes, including Exmoor Glass, the Harbour Gallery, and Porlock Bay Oysters, which opened expanded premises in 2024.
The larger village of Porlock is approximately one mile away and has a broader range of amenities including grocery shops, a traditional butcher, chemist, cash machine, hardware shop, visitor centre, and a selection of independent restaurants and tea rooms. Most shops in Porlock and Porlock Weir keep hours of 9am to 5pm, often extending during the summer season.
Porlock Weir was recently used as a filming location for The Salt Path, the adaptation of Raynor Winn's bestselling memoir about walking the South West Coast Path.
