I would strongly recommend this hotel. In a city that has fantastic sights but an underdeveloped tourism infrastructure, it's crucial to have a safe and comfortable base of operations. This hotel fits the bill perfectly. The rooms are clean, the service is fantastic, and the dinners are really quite something (more on that below). Overall, it's the kind of place where the proprietor will come around to all the guests hanging around the open-air lounge and the garden, and make small talk with everyone to make sure that folks are happy. It's hard to go wrong with a hotel like this.
In particular, I very strongly recommend the traditional Mon dinner that the hotel offers -- go with the set meal. Mawlamyne is not known for its restaurants -- we had a hard time finding decent food in town itself, even at supposedly high-end destinations. The dinner we had at the hotel was the single glorious exception. After we reserved a meal the morning of the dinner, the proprietor's daughter scrounged up the ingredients and cooked the meal during the afternoon. We were served dinner in the beautiful and peaceful garden. The ingredients were fresh, the spices and the tastes vivid, and the environment really memorable -- all in stark contrast to our experience in town itself.
If there's a downside to the hotel, it's that you're a bit of a drive to town. It is, however, a great base to access Ogre Island and the many sights south of town. We stayed 3 nights and it worked out well for us.
