I booked a sea-view room and had amazing views from the deck. The room was great - spacious and had everything I needed. Liked the hot chocolate sachet and bottled water finishing touches (that many SA hotels do not do). Blockout curtains were good too (although I wanted to wake up with the sun). Breakfast was mostly ok - it said baked good but there were none, though everything else was fine. The hotel was apparently near some restaurants but I did not venture out. Parking was tricky for me (but not for others) as I was the last to arrive and had to squeeze into the 4-car garage. I think anyone who arrived after me parked outside. Wifi worked ok. I read some negative reviews on sound and location - I agree that the rooms are not soundproof but it did not bother me as I was not trying to sleep during breakfast; and I was not expecting to walk around the area at night (it IS South Africa, after all). All said, a few niggles, but a good experience and I would stay here again if I had to stay in East London.
The facility cannot be rated above 2-star. The surroundings are dirty and unkempt. I had to go round trying to locate entrance, which turned out to be a small side door. Small reception area at corner, no foyer. A security guard, who was at least friendly, was also a receptionist.
Though the room had seemingly been refurbished with wooden floor, it was dirty. The throw on the bed had oil and food stains. There was a nail polish stain on the floor. Worst was under the bed and on the wall in headboard area - It was as if these had not been swept for weeks. I couldn't even make coffee because the kettle had brown stains at bottom.
When I requested a change of room I was told that was not possible because Hotel.com had booked me that room. I couldn't sleep another night and decided to book day-2 in a far better establishment - a 4-star along the esplanade - at less than what I had paid at The Paralian. I'm glad I moved even though I had booked and paid for 2 days. I even took pictures of these things as evidence so I'm not just moaning.
The surface of room floors scratched and dirty and the sleeper couch for my son in terrible shape. This particular room was just not satisfactory compared to the previous one I occupied. However, it had spectacular views! Staff with good manners and service.
The first room I was placed in at The Paralian (#10) was small, poorly laid out, and generally "inadequate", whereas the second one (#3) was much more spacious and comfortable...although the bathroom is poorly laid out and resulting in me skinning my shin when trying to enter it in the middle of the night.
The biggest problem is that the entire building...a small/boutique hotel...is built of concrete, metal and glass...with absolutely ZERO noise deadening properties.
As such, I wasn't able to get a proper night's sleep in 7 attempts.
Even this morning (Sunday), I was rudely awakened by a "loud talker" making a phone call in the breakfast area (the third such "loud talker alarm call"...by three different people...in 7 days).
The area is not well regarded by the people I met with in East London. ALL of them instructed me to NOT go for a walk in the evening, for my own safety.
The staff is pleasant and very accommodating, but the hotel itself was a let down.
If I hadn't booked my stay using Hotels.com - through which I couldn't get a refund - I would have left on Day 3!
