Lounge on the soft sands, surf the Atlantic waves and enjoy tasty seafood at this broad and spacious stretch of golden sand.
The nearest beach to Aveiro city, Barra Beach is a wide and frequently windy stretch of pale sandy shoreline. Observe fishermen casting their rods from the piers and rocks, and stroll barefoot on the soft golden sand. Depending on the conditions, swim or try wind-powered water sports.
During calmer weather, it is possible to swim on Barra Beach. Pack a swimsuit and paddle in the shallows before drying off under the warm rays of the sun.
In windier weather, simply stroll along the length of the beach. You’ll see people trying to catch fresh fish either out on boats or using rods cast from the pier. The beach is also a popular place for water sports. Try surfing, bodyboarding or sailing.
Look for the towering 19th-century Aveiro Lighthouse, which overlooks the beach. This red-and-white structure soars to a height of 200 feet (60 meters) above sea level and is one of the tallest lighthouses in Europe. The tower watches over the dangerous waters at the point where the Aveiro Lagoon meets the sea. Climb the 271 steps to the top of the lighthouse for fantastic views over the beach.
Buy ice cream from one of the beachside vendors and stroll along the boardwalk with a cone in hand admiring the ocean views. For lunch or dinner select from the many seafood restaurants beside Barra Beach or within walking distance.
The beach is at its busiest and liveliest during the summer months when sunbathers crowd the sands. Stay in the area until after sunset to witness the nearby bars filling up. If you are a keen surfer, bring a wetsuit and come during winter when the surf breaks are at their best.
Find Barra Beach west of the city of Aveiro, between São Jacinto Dunes and the Costa Nova beach. To get to Praia da Barra, drive or take a 30-minute bus ride from Aveiro.
