Dozens of Greek islands in a circular formation in the Aegean Sea offer iconic experiences filled with beaches, ruins, sunshine and warm hospitality.

Travelers planning vacations in the islands of Greece often envision the beauty, traditions, food and sunshine of the Cyclades Islands. Centered on the sacred uninhabited island of Delos, most of the other islands feature boxy, white homes perched on hillsides overlooking brilliant blue waters. Many have fascinating archaeological sites going back as much as 3,000 years. Pick one destination to spend a relaxing week or plan an island-hopping adventure to experience the uniqueness of multiple locations when you visit the Cyclades.

Mykonos is one of the most popular islands, known for its party atmosphere. Walk the narrow streets where colorful bougainvillea hangs over whitewashed walls broken by equally colorful doors and terrace railings. The island has exceptional shoreline stretches, including the appropriately named Paradise Beach. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos and Lena’s House Folk Museum to learn about the island’s past. The nearby island of Ios is also known for exciting nightlife.

Travel to Santorini for even more beautiful beaches. This cluster of islands around an undersea volcanic crater was the film setting for the gorgeous Greek portion of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Hike to Oia at the top of the island or join a sunset sail out of Amoudi Bay.

While it isn’t possible to spend the night on Delos, this island is important for its archaeological and cultural impact. See temples from the 7th century B.C. in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visit the central island of Paros and its neighbor Antiparos for great food and extraordinary beaches such as sandy Lageri, rocky Kolymbithres and windy Golden, popular for windsurfing. Naxos has a perfect blend of beautiful beaches and fascinating mountain villages such as Apiranthos, Filoti and Halki.

Fly to Santorini or Mykonos from Athens in about 40 minutes or take ferries from the Piraeus Port in 5 to 8 hours. Travel by ferry between the Cyclades Islands or set up a chartered sailing trip to create a leisurely schedule for your own interests.
