Yaquina Head Light House

Yaquina Head Light House
Spot whales and learn about the nature and history of the area via the docents and interactive displays of this charming lighthouse.

The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a quaint, whitewashed cylinder overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The top of its black lantern room is 93 feet (28 meters) high, making it the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. Browse the intriguing exhibits in the Yaquina Head Interpretive Center to find out about the ecosystems in this area of natural beauty.

Embark on one of the guided tours, which take place at the start of every hour from late morning until late afternoon. Speak with knowledgeable docents about the history and practical features of the lighthouse. The brick structure was built in 1868 in Paris and its lamp was first lit in 1873. Climb the 114 steps to the top for the best view from this cliff-top structure.

Purchase souvenirs and other items with a nautical theme in the gift shop. Peruse books, maps and postcards relating to the scenic area, which was used as a setting for the horror film The Ring, among other productions. Wander through the pleasant grassy fields in which the lighthouse stands. The picturesque area with its views of the ocean is an ideal spot for a picnic.

Try to spot gray whales offshore from late fall through early winter and late winter through early spring. Relax and work on your tan on the pebbles of Cobble Beach. The tide pools contain a range of colorful marine treasures, such as orange sea stars and purple sea urchins.

Note that the site opens daily, with its limited tickets sold to the first to arrive. Tours operate for much of the summer. The surrounding park opens every day from morning until sunset.

Find the Yaquina Head Lighthouse in the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area at the western point of Agate Beach. Drive north from Newport for 3.5 miles (5.5 kilometers) to get here. Nearby attractions include Agate Beach Golf Course, the Newport Cinema Center and Starfish Cove.

We wanted to see the tidal pools and didn't read one of the information signs near the top of the stairs to the beach, but park rangers were everywhere and none mentioned how incredibly difficult the stone beach was to navigate. And, the rocks between the pools required the right kind of shoes to be safe. Ours were OK but it still was a struggle and required good balance. So the pools we could safely reach had very little to see...maybe farther out it was better.

Great views. I was there at high tide. I bet the tide pools would be amazing at low tide.

Go at low tide to see the tide pools and the seals on the rocks. Call ahead for a tour of the lighthouse.
