As the fall colors continue to show their brilliance the high country of Colorado slowly turns to a golden brown waiting for the first snows of winter. Uncompagre Peak 14,309’ is located just west of Lake City CO, it’s neighbor Wetterhorn Peak 14,015’ make and epic fall trip. It’s possible to drive 4wd to both trailheads and cut across country between the peaks for an epic day in the high country. Be aware that Wetterhorn has severe exposure and it’s required that you have some climbing ability to reach the summit.

This view of Ouray park is taken from the perimeter trail overlooking the city in the early morning. If you take the trail, get a map from the visitors center or online first as it is difficult to find in some spots, but well worth the views.
